Very interesting to listen to and learn more about the recruitment process particularly by boutique firms. I was also interested to hear David‘s thoughts on AI and it’s use both in the recruitment process and for posting on social media.

Intrigued and horrified by the reference to the muscle flexing interviewer!

CFO of a national sport. What's it really like? | Nimesh Kataria, CFO at the ECB
Q: How do you view AI and technology transforming the CFO role in the near future?
AI should be leveraged to model and drive change, but CFOs must lead by example in adopting technology, ensuring we rethink processes, and staying humans-in-the-loop for strategic decisions. The emphasis is on learning from peers in the finance community and implementing practical, measured changes.

Q: What have been some memorable milestones in your career so far?
Bidding, contracting, and partnering for Olympics rights at Eurosport; the joint venture with BT leading to TNT Sports; and finally taking on full financial ownership at the ECB, including managing insurance policies and the complexities of attracting private investment into the 100 competition.
CFO of a national sport. What's it really like? | Nimesh Kataria, CFO at the ECB
Q: How did your path lead you to the CFO seat, and what motivated the move?
I always aspired to be a CFO but was selective about industries and organizations I believed in. My move from advisory at Ernst & Young into commercial finance at Discovery initially set the trajectory, and opportunities at Eurosport and later the ECB aligned with my passion for cricket and the role I wanted to play in the leadership team.
From start-up CFO to £100m finance function and a 9-figure exit | Insights from Tom Platford
Q: How has the role of the CFO evolved from early-stage to later-stage companies?
He argues the core remains value creation, risk management, and long-term planning, but stresses that modern CFOs must be able to zoom in and out, raise finance, and also dive into operational plumbing when needed, maintaining structure while staying agile.

Q: What were the hardest moments on the path to the exit at SuperAwesome?
Key moments include navigating a high-pressure due diligence phase with multiple stakeholders, dealing with COVID-related disruptions, and a difficult redundancy round during the buyback, all of which taught him about resilience, prioritization, and leading through tough decisions.
