  • Informative Podcast

The Starting Block podcast does a great job of keeping the listener interested and entertained while informing them about a variety of great athletic development topics. There are a few audio issues, and the hosts sometimes do not explain certain concepts as thoroughly as they could but it is otherwise extremely well done. I feel motivated to hit the gym at the end of every episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 122: Q&A - Water Training & How Isometrics Can Influence Speed
Q: Are water-filled tubes and balls useful for training pitchers or baseball players, and how should they be used?
They can be a helpful adjunct for deceleration, stability, and perturbation training, especially for improving control against moving resistance, but they are not a substitute for building fundamentals or heavy weight training; use them to reinforce proper positions after basics are solid, and adjust load and duration to the athlete's level.
Ep. 123: Guest Interview: Kayla Girgen, Author of "Ruck Fit"
Q: So yeah, how did you get started on that path with rucking?
Kayla discusses discovering rucking during the pandemic as a mental health and outdoor activity, the community aspect, and how it evolved into her book and ongoing work.
Ep. 123: Guest Interview: Kayla Girgen, Author of "Ruck Fit"
Q: Heard about your book. We're definitely going to get to it, but I kind of want to know a little bit about you and learn your story and introduce yourself to the audience.
Kayla explains her transition from a corporate role to pursuing fitness and nutrition, discovering rucking, pursuing a PT cert, then becoming a registered dietitian, and how her experiences shaped her focus on practical nutrition and the benefits of rucking.
Ep. 120: Q & A - Leg Drive, Hamstring Issues, Enhanced Recovery
Q: How do you use your legs to increase power for an upper-body action like pitching or throwing?
Power should originate from the ground up, progressing through balance and posture, a strong linear engine during the stride, and a coordinated rotational transfer through the hips and trunk, with the fingers delivering the final energy release.
Ep. 118: Athlete Spotlight - Drake Meeks, Pitcher - Southern Miss
Q: What was that first workout like, Drake?
Drake describes the brutal initial sessions, including pegleg-style drills and sled work, and how those early sessions were instrumental in building the base for later improvements.
