Such a brilliant podcast of warts and all of having a family member with disability. Hard facts for professionals; considering the impact of your engagement. And often so damn funny. Invaluable!

  • Inspiring and supportive

I love this podcast so much, it’s enlightening and validating. I’ve really been through the mill with my daughter and consider myself a good advocate but I am learning new language and adding to my arsenal with this podcast every week. The system’s broken, but we are stronger together. Also lots of good laughs too. Thank you!

  • Parent carer trauma

Just such a great conversation today on trauma I had to write and say. Thank you for tackling this tricky conversation with humour and honesty. I had a lot of truth filled and illuminating realisations whilst listening. Dr Joanna Griffin is brilliant as a guest and thank you for the podcast.

  • Parent carers - subscribe to this!

Parenting a child with disability can sometimes feel like an overwhelming journey. This podcast was a brilliant discovery for me and has helped me through so much - it’s so brilliant to hear parent carers in a range of different situations discuss the highs and lows. The Heartbeat of Communication Recast | S5 | E19
Q: How can practitioners support families without eroding the natural bond between parent and child?
Prioritize listening, support flexible approaches that honor the family's lived experience, and emphasize intensive interaction and shared moments over strict adherence to therapy plans.
The Heartbeat of Communication Recast | S5 | E19
Q: What is the most important thing about communication with Lucy, given the focus on AAC and tech tools?
Meaningful, joy-filled connection that happens in the child's own terms, beyond just teaching language or using devices; presence and being in the child's world are crucial.
AAC, Tech and the Power of Real Connection Recast | S5 | E18
Q: Do you think it changes the tone and how people respond to you by the way in which you communicate?
Yes, people often misjudge competence when communication is not verbal, so partners and staff must model and respect AAC, listening to the tone behind the words as well as the words themselves.
AAC, Tech and the Power of Real Connection Recast | S5 | E18
Q: But how does your AAC form the entirety of the way that you communicate?
Beth explains that she communicates multimodally, using AAC in combination with body language, eye contact, and prompts from supporters, and that the device does not replace traditional forms of interaction but complements them.
Lost Voice Guy: Life, Comedy and Disability Recast | S5 | E17
Q: Was there a specific person who saw your communicative potential and helped give you a voice, or did everyone just support you in general?
He credits his speech therapist for persistence and recognizing his potential, underscoring the long-term impact of dedicated professionals in helping AAC users find their voice.
