  • Well Researched and Always Interesting!

I’ve always enjoyed silent films, but recently began watching more of them and researching them. It’s a fascinating era, and I was so happy to find this podcast. Everything is well researched and I’m learning about new movies and actors that I’ve never heard of. I would definitely recommend this podcast to anyone who is interested in silent films or even film history in general.

  • A great and fun educational podcast

I appreciate how a-political this podcast is- I wait eagerly for my favorite silent films to be discussed but until then I found myself on pins & needles listening to unusual films that I had heard of but never saw like The Dragon Painter. But hearing the episode discussing The Phantom Carriage, I am now a solid fan! Great opinions!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Italian Immigration Experience on Film
Q: How did the Pittsburgh-specific immigration experience shape the reception of the film when shown at the Frick, and what local historical resources were highlighted?
She discussed local communities in Pittsburgh like Lower Hill District and Little Italy, the presence of Italian American organizations, and how regional history informed the discussion around the film's themes.
The Italian Immigration Experience on Film
Q: What place does the Italian occupy in the broader story of Italian immigration to the United States, and how does the film reflect or distort that narrative?
Melissa explained that the film attempts a positive portrayal of Italian immigrants but also leans into period stereotypes; she emphasized the importance of historical context and archival interpretation to balance empathy with critical scrutiny.
Exploring Silent Cinema with Maggie Hennefeld
Q: You mentioned Leontine and the Nasty Women project; how did you discover Leontine and what makes her significant for your work?
Leontine came to my attention through an earlier DVD set curated by Marianne Lewinsky; I fell in love with her character and then pursued every surviving Leontine film, highlighting how her internationally popular series was largely inaccessible and how her mischief provides a lens on gender and performance in early cinema.
Exploring Silent Cinema with Maggie Hennefeld
Q: One of the mainstay questions on the show is how you found silent film and what drew you to it; could you share your path into this field?
I grew up as a cinephile in Brooklyn, developed a passion for noir and classic cinema, and gradually moved toward silent film through a scholarly focus on feminist theories of physical comedy and archival research, which led me to seek out and curate obscure films that aren't readily accessible.
The Life of Barbara La Marr with Author Sherri Snyder
Q: Was there a story or event or other piece of info that you uncovered that really surprised you or stuck out in some way?
One of the most surprising elements was the disparity between the sensational headlines about her and who she truly was as a person; she was well liked and known for her kindness, contrasting the often scandalous image the media portrayed.
