  • Probably the most irrelevant rugby union podcast out there

The rugby paper is excellent, however unfortunately these old boys can’t hold a flame to the competition podcasts. Occasional good analysis tarred by constant outdated anecdotes and clear disconnect with todays game. Just listen to the July 5th 2023 podcast and their predications for the Rugby Championship, pretty funny how wrong they are.

  • Why?

If I wanted a podcast about the situation in Ukraine, I’d have searched for that. Two days after a great six nations round and we get the best part of an hour on the Ukraine war?!

WHY ARE FRANCE DOMINATING EUROPE? | Top 14 Boom + Rugby Overtaking Football | Rugby Paper Roundup
Q: What role does the broadcasting and media strategy play in this growth?
Broadcast deals and prime-time scheduling have made rugby more accessible and financially viable, helping clubs invest in players and facilities, which in turn sustains higher performance and attendance, creating a public perception of a rising, globally competitive rugby landscape in France.
WHY ARE FRANCE DOMINATING EUROPE? | Top 14 Boom + Rugby Overtaking Football | Rugby Paper Roundup
Q: Why does the panel think France is dominating European rugby at the moment?
Robert argues that a combination of strategic alignment, strong financial backing, a coherent development pathway (including the JIFF rule), and a deeply rooted club culture across many towns has created a virtuous cycle that feeds talent into the national team and clubs, while broadcast deals have amplified visibility and investment.
Women's Six Nations Grand Slam Drama + Lions Excitement | ft Ruck Star Lizzie | The Rugby Paper Roundup
Q: What stood out most about the Grand Slam and win in Bordeaux?
The panel highlighted England's ability to perform under pressure, the depth of the squad, and the continued development of younger players who are stepping up without resting on their laurels, creating a sense of a sustained dynasty.
GRAND SLAM DECIDER! | England v France + Historic Aviva Clash in Six Nations | Rugby Paper Roundup
Q: I'm going to have to put you on the spot, Caolin. What's your prediction for Bordeaux on Sunday?
Caolin predicts a tight, high-quality clash with England aiming to leverage depth and experience, but France's star-studded backline and home support could tilt the balance in a dramatic, high-scoring finish.
Inside Rugby Journalism with Ben Jaycock | Starstruck Interviews, Bias & Big Matches
Q: Speaking of rugby background, is there any rugby background with yourself, like playing or anything at all?
Ben notes he played at school and university but is primarily a journalist; his strength lies in reporting and analysis rather than high-level playing, which informs his writing style.
