  • Stokes inquiry

I never miss an episode. This podcast stokes my ongoing inquiry into what my role(s) might be in the contemporary human-rewilding movement. In sum, it gets me pondering how my very modern family and community can move toward living in ways that don’t destroy the world on autopilot, but instead — like hunter gatherers immemorial -- contribute to balance. Importantly, it also stokes inquiry about the systems that’ve been built (and need to be dismantled) that stand in the way of this balance.

  • Absolutely fascinating

If you’re interested in anthropology, human history, or how to navigate our future in a world on the precipice of catastrophe, Peter’s podcast is a must listen. His guests and interviews are absolutely fascinating—not just interesting in a “this is smart and good for me so I should listen to it” sort of way, but in a truly riveting, “I can’t turn this off” kind of way. Honestly, I can’t listen to most podcasts because I’m a journalist and find most interviewers infuriating because they’re so ego... more

  • mind-opening

i started with episode 6 with dr leonard martin and since then, i’ve listened to a few episodes. each listening my mind is opened a bit further. ideas about collapse, the sixth extinction, rewilding are presented with care and depth. personally i had never heard of some of these ideas before, but the deep resonance in my body tells me that these are just names to experiences that we have already been living through. in a sense, it’s comforting to talk about the crisis we’re living through with o... more

  • Absorbing antidote to the ills of lost wildness

I have been listening to this podcast since it began and find the episodes with guest interviews particularly good. Peter is an intelligent and interested host, peppering the shows with self-deprecating humour. The longer conversational format is excellent for allowing the guests to expand upon how they got to be where they are now in their lives. All the guests, however far their interests, faith or views were from my own, proved to have deeply interesting life paths which I greatly enjoyed hea... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hierarchy & Collapse w/ Luke Kemp
Q: Why did you choose the term Goliath instead of civilization in your book, and how do definitions shape the argument?
Kemp explains that the term Goliath is a more precise, less baggage-laden way to describe a hierarchy-dominated social structure; he argues that civilization as a term carries propaganda and vagueness, and that a Goliath helps trace domination hierarchies and their fragility across histories.
Hierarchy & Collapse w/ Luke Kemp
Q: Have you heard of the recent bonobo Hugo incident and how it relates to coalition-building ideas from Christopher Boehm's work?
The discussion references bonobo Hugo's killing of an infant and connects it to ideas about coalition-building and anti-dominance behaviors described by Boehm, highlighting how real-world social dynamics reflect the tension between cohesion and antisocial conduct in peaceful societies.
How to Start a Friction Fire the Communal Way w/ Ian Walton Larner & Aoife Ni Lodainn
Q: What is the need fire slash fire churn slash chenne agin, and what is its history and significance?
The need fire is a traditional friction fire ritual that was used to create pure fire, particularly in times of distress, allowing communities to connect and heal by lighting new fires sourced cooperatively from wood, such as for healing cattle disease.
How to Start a Friction Fire the Communal Way w/ Ian Walton Larner & Aoife Ni Lodainn
Q: How did you come to Apprentice with fire making and tending? And why is it a passion of yours?
Ian became fascinated with fire as a child but deepened his connection during spiritual retreats in the early 2000s. Struggling with mental health, he found purpose through ritual and traditional fire-making methods, which he taught himself and became passionate about.
Solar Punk and Rewilding w/ Andrew Sage
Q: What is Solar Punk and where did it emerge?
Solar Punk combines the ideas of renewable energy and hopeful futures, serving as a movement for sustainable living and social change.
