  • The piano tech podcast I’ve been waiting for

I have been a piano technician since 2009, and with all the driving we do I became a podcast and audiobook junky fairly quickly. Every few years I would do a quick search for piano tech podcasts, but never found one until now. And wow, this goes way harder than it has any right to. The host, guests, content, and production quality are all top notch. I have met or heard of many of the guests at conventions and what have you, and these are the leaders in our industry. One million stars.

Reclaiming Manufacturing, Family Expectations, and Surviving Through Community with Anna Petrof

Petrof uses global competitions to name major models and to reward pianists; winners receive pianos and opportunities, with names like Mistral and Flow reflecting winds and natural phenomena, tying branding to artistry.
Reclaiming Manufacturing, Family Expectations, and Surviving Through Community with Anna Petrof
Q: What were the major changes at Petrof after privatization and consolidation, and how did the company shift its strategy?
The company reduced from five factories and over a thousand employees to a leaner structure, focused on quality, and invested in new piano lines and better materials to restore roots while expanding into international markets.
Reclaiming Manufacturing, Family Expectations, and Surviving Through Community with Anna Petrof
Q: Can you tell us about your own background in the industry and what it was like growing up in your family?

Dealership Prep, In-Home Voicing, and Midwest Piano Care with Morgan Cowell
Q: What are some of Morgan's biggest aha moments in rebuilding and what tricks or concepts should peers know?
Everything in the process matters because different components influence the final sound; tools and workflow must be optimized for efficiency, and small, repeatable tests (like pin block fitting and lead-off checks) can dramatically improve outcomes.
Dealership Prep, In-Home Voicing, and Midwest Piano Care with Morgan Cowell
Q: What should aspiring tech salesmen look out for in terms of the challenges and expectations of starting your shop?
Patience with sales, understanding that you may not close a deal quickly, and ensuring you have financial buffers; build credibility by not appearing desperate and help clients find the right home for their piano, often using financing options to ease the process.
