  • The piano tech podcast I’ve been waiting for

I have been a piano technician since 2009, and with all the driving we do I became a podcast and audiobook junky fairly quickly. Every few years I would do a quick search for piano tech podcasts, but never found one until now. And wow, this goes way harder than it has any right to. The host, guests, content, and production quality are all top notch. I have met or heard of many of the guests at conventions and what have you, and these are the leaders in our industry. One million stars.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dealership Prep, In-Home Voicing, and Midwest Piano Care with Morgan Cowell
Q: What are some of Morgan's biggest aha moments in rebuilding and what tricks or concepts should peers know?
Everything in the process matters because different components influence the final sound; tools and workflow must be optimized for efficiency, and small, repeatable tests (like pin block fitting and lead-off checks) can dramatically improve outcomes.
Dealership Prep, In-Home Voicing, and Midwest Piano Care with Morgan Cowell
Q: What should aspiring tech salesmen look out for in terms of the challenges and expectations of starting your shop?
Patience with sales, understanding that you may not close a deal quickly, and ensuring you have financial buffers; build credibility by not appearing desperate and help clients find the right home for their piano, often using financing options to ease the process.
Becoming a Dealer, Audio Recording, and Running a Shop with Sam Bennett
Q: How do you decide whether to rebuild or buy new?
You assess musical applicability, then financial justification, and finally sentimentality, aiming for an outcome that preserves instrument value while meeting the customer's emotional needs.
Becoming a Dealer, Audio Recording, and Running a Shop with Sam Bennett
Q: What are your thoughts on advertising and marketing for a piano shop?
Advertising helps bring walk-through traffic, but the key is sustainable content and leveraging existing customer relationships; consistent, quality content plus referrals are more impactful than one-off campaigns.
Bridge Capping, Voicing with B-72, and Replacing Soundboards with Ken Eschete
Q: Can you tell us about B-72 and its applications in voicing hammers and conservation work?
B-72 offers a reversible, solvent-compatible way to consolidate, fill, and bond within delicate materials. It allows us to smooth and strengthen hammers and other components without compromising historical integrity, and its diffusion characteristics can be modeled and controlled to avoid unwanted changes in tone and feel.
