  • Invaluable surprise

I am a fan of books on tape and podcasts, but one day a couple weeks ago I just could not do one more politic podcast. So I went poking about for SOMETHING POSITIVE! and found The Professional Artist Podcast. Each show is only about 25min, so it’s easy to “fit them in”. The conversations are very real. Looking at life as a professional artist from as many different angles as there are artists! These are Real life stories. No BS. The artists being interviewed share the wins and failures, the high... more

Building an Art Career Without Art School (What Actually Works)
Q: As you look back on your career navigating the contemporary art market and the art world, what are the top one to two lessons you've learned that you think other artists should hear?
The first lesson is that it isn't a confrontation; you need to learn the market and stay in the game, fighting to stay in the art world. The second lesson is about practical realism: understand your audience, the value of your work, and how to position it so it resonates with buyers, galleries, and institutions, while still staying true to your artistic vision.
How to Build an Art Career Without Selling Out
Q: What final thoughts would you like to share with artists listening today?
There is nothing better than spending one's life creating meaningful work; don't sell out, and cultivate your unique voice over time.
How to Build an Art Career Without Selling Out
Q: How do you balance the need for ideas with the realities of the art market?
Focus on the integrity of the work and develop a practice that allows deep exploration; commercial considerations should support, not dictate, the artwork.
How to Build an Art Career Without Selling Out
Q: What is the top piece of advice you would give to an emerging or mid-career artist?
Be true to yourself, learn how to learn, and immerse yourself in the broad history of painting to build a solid foundation for your own vision.
Making Art With a Full-Time Job (The System That Works)
Q: How do you manage balancing a full-time studio practice with other work in different studios?
I treat it as a math problem and plan my weeks in advance, using voice notes during walks and keeping a detailed planner to allocate time between 'work' and 'my own work,' while also coordinating with my husband to keep everything moving.
