  • Diamondbacks and Rangers AND Pirates!(?)

I wanted to like this podcast… But the discussion trying to link these three teams together was so stretched and thin. My favorite line was “there’s nothing stopping the Pirates from being as good as these teams”. Well, there is and it’s Bob Nutting. I think I’ll spend my time elsewhere outside this house of mirrors.

  • Mitch Better than Kenny?

I’m sorry, just this take alone immediately disqualifies this pod as a trustworthy source of Steelers takes. The team was immediately better when Kenny came in for Mitch and that was with KP taking zero 1st team reps last year. If you’re looking for good content on Steelers look elsewhere

  • Hard to listen to, literally

I love the Steelers and want to like this podcast, but it is weak. The host struggles to talk in a coherent manner, his interview skills are severely lacking and they play the intro music too much. The main issue, though, is that they can’t seem to get the sound levels right. Last episode, Chris Carter was barely audible, but Brian Batko was loud.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

TROUBLE for Steelers in Joey Porter Jr. contract talks? Where does Robert Spears-Jennings fit?
Q: Chris, what can you tell us about Robert Spears-Jennings and what impact might he have this training camp?
Spears-Jennings is projected as a potential special teams contributor with limited early defensive responsibility. His speed and punt/kick coverage ability could earn him a roster spot as a depth safety if he can prove value on special teams and show steady development over the next couple of years.
TROUBLE for Steelers in Joey Porter Jr. contract talks? Where does Robert Spears-Jennings fit?
Q: Chris, Daylen Everette, you mentioned him earlier, was the he got a lot of praise during OTA's mini camp as the third round pick. I think he's one of the least talked about members of those first five picks, just because there was no obvious super need for him other than what we're talking about with Joey Porter and having a long-term running mate option with him. But there was a lot of praise lavished on him by this coaching staff. How much of that do you think was authentic and how much do you think maybe they were gassing him up a little bit for when they sit at the contract negotiation table with Joey Porter Jr?
I think the coaches were genuinely impressed with Daylen Everette's performance and potential, but the hype around him is likely amplified in the context of projecting depth and chemistry with Joey Porter Jr. The coaching staff tends to build confidence in young players to help with development and negotiations by showing a path to playing time, though Porter Jr.'s contract talks remain the primary focus.
Pirates mailbag: Don Kelly's plans at catcher after Joey Bart trade? Marcell Ozuna figuring it out?
Q: What is your guess for the catching situation going forward and how does it play out the rest of the season?
Endy Rodriguez is expected to take the bulk of catching duties, around 60-70% of the games, with Henry Davis as a secondary option and occasional usage of skeins, and there could be trades considered if needed, but Rodriguez has established himself as the top catcher.
Pirates mailbag: Too soon to worry about Paul Skenes? What's next for Jared Jones?
Q: What is the best and worst case scenario for Jared Jones returning this season?
Best case: five to seven strong innings per start with a clear path to bullpen support; worst case: injury or diminished effectiveness forcing frequent reliance on Maginski or Overdotel.
Pirates mailbag: Too soon to worry about Paul Skenes? What's next for Jared Jones?
Q: When will they make a trade?
The host says trades are possible but often require a premium in June, explaining that most teams believe they can contend and may overpay for bullpen help or back-end arms.
