  • The Enneagram and Transformation

As a grateful member of the Institute for Conscious Being founded by Lark and Joe Howell, I found this podcast encouraging and inspiring. If you are drawn to personal healing through a loving and soulful connection, Joe’s words about the ICB and its Enneagram community will be most helpful. Hugh Ballou’s questions and comments were timely and very well chosen. I look forward to listening to more podcasts from this series. Thank you to both Hugh and to Joe.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When You Think of Trash, Think of Long Way Home
Q: What leadership lesson has this project taught you?
Leadership means listening, learning continuously, and building systems that empower others to contribute—from students to community builders—so that ownership is shared and sustainable beyond individual efforts.
When You Think of Trash, Think of Long Way Home
Q: Moving on, how did trash become your central theme, your focus?
Trash became a driver because everywhere we looked there was waste impacting health and opportunity. By turning waste into usable infrastructure and educational materials, we created a tangible, scalable model that links environmental cleanup with community development and learning.
When You Think of Trash, Think of Long Way Home
Q: So Matt, welcome to The Nonprofit Exchange, and back to when you founded this. What was the primary problem you were trying to solve, and what did you misunderstand at the beginning that you now understand better?
The core challenges were poverty, inadequate education, environmental contamination, and limited economic opportunity. Over time, I realized the importance of starting with community needs and local resources rather than a top-down approach, which shaped a curriculum and projects that are grounded in local realities.
Say It Skillfully: Communication That Strengthens Missions and the People Behind Them
Q: What practical steps can leaders take to foster a safe environment for feedback?
Leaders should invite different points of view, acknowledge differences, thank people for sharing, avoid punitive reactions, and use a simple 'Me, You, We' framework to guide feedback and decision-making.
Say It Skillfully: Communication That Strengthens Missions and the People Behind Them
Q: How did Say It Skillfully begin, and what sparked its growth?
Molly explains that a random, early video where a junior person speaks up in a roomful of management sparked wider attention, leading to ongoing weekly content and a training program to help others speak up in service to the greater good.
