  • A gem for all in education

This is a CI gold mine of information, strategies, and knowledge that will be sure to enhance your teaching methods. I learn so much in every episode- often I have to stop, take notes, listen again, and then plan accordingly for my next class. I’ve put into practice many of Dr. Printer’s methods and they’ve all proven positive and effective in teaching today’s adolescents. Please never stop making episodes!

  • A radicilaizing show

I’ve always believed in a more natural, student-centered approach to teaching Hawaiian language—one that moves beyond the colonial, grammar-driven frameworks like ‘pepeke,’ which simply translate Western systems into Hawaiian terms. The Motivated Classroom was the first CI/SLA podcast I found, and it immediately radicalized how I think about language teaching.

This show confirmed that comprehensible input isn’t just a method—it’s a liberating philosophy. It empowers teachers to prioritize meani... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

83 ¦ Language acquisition through compelling, comprehensible input with Dr. Stephen Krashen
Q: How can teachers practically bring more reading-driven input into their classrooms?
Prioritize self-selected, easy-to-access reading materials, use graded readers to build confidence, and leverage compelling content like graphic novels or comics to spark sustained engagement and vocabulary growth.
83 ¦ Language acquisition through compelling, comprehensible input with Dr. Stephen Krashen
Q: Why do you think, despite decades of research, CI-based teaching isn't more widespread globally?
The barriers include the difficulty of accessing the theory, its presentation in dense academic prose, and the high cost of traditional journals; open-access publishing and easier-to-digest formats are part of the proposed solution.
100 ¦ Self-determination theory, motivation and language learning with Dr. Richard Ryan
Q: What is your vision for the future of schooling and language learning if we emphasize autonomy, competence, and relatedness?
Education should leverage technology and flexible, student-centered approaches; classrooms become hubs of agentic activity with supportive structures that honor student voice and creativity, leading to richer engagement and long-term language development.
100 ¦ Self-determination theory, motivation and language learning with Dr. Richard Ryan
Q: What practical steps can language teachers take to make their classes more motivating while operating within typical classroom constraints?
Begin by diagnosing barriers from the students' perspective, avoid over-reliance on external rewards or arbitrary quizzes, and incrementally increase autonomy through meaningful choices, creative tasks, and opportunities for student-led inquiry within a supportive climate.
100 ¦ Self-determination theory, motivation and language learning with Dr. Richard Ryan
Q: Why do you think education has been slow to embrace self-determination theory and the basic psychological needs?
Educators often chase narrow outcomes like test scores and rankings, losing sight of the need to cultivate a climate that supports learners' inner motivation; SDT argues for focusing on the process and creating conditions where students feel autonomous, competent, and related, which in turn improves outcomes.
