I found Lee‘s podcast only this week and found myself listening to one and another one and another episode. Especially Ana from Colombia touched my coffee soul very deep and awoke my wish to build a sustainable business that supports coffee farmers again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP 1575 | Part 5 of 5 | How Crisis Will Reshape the Coffee Industry (Kim Thompson)
Q: How do you see the coffee crisis impacting the industry in the near term?
Kim outlines cascading effects on supply chains, pricing, and capacity, emphasizing the need for resilience, tight contracts, and strong relationships with farmers to weather disruptions.
EP 1578 | Part 3 of 5 | Does Regenerative Coffee Taste Better? (Lucia Reid)
Q: What explains the variability in flavor profiles across regenerative plots?
Flavor variability appears tied to management intensity and the timing of regenerative practices, including shade management, sunlight exposure during ripening, and nutrient cycling, which contributed to sweeter and more floral flavor potentials in certain plots.
EP 1578 | Part 3 of 5 | Does Regenerative Coffee Taste Better? (Lucia Reid)
Q: Did higher regenerative intensity consistently produce better cupping scores?
No, there was no overall statistically significant relationship between regenerative intensity and cupping scores, though some highly regenerative plots did yield exceptional cups when managed in a timely and contextual way.
EP 1578 | Part 3 of 5 | Does Regenerative Coffee Taste Better? (Lucia Reid)
Q: What was the most profound finding of the study?
The most profound finding was that a 10% increase in soil quality correlated with higher physical quality and lower defect counts, indicating soil health has a meaningful impact on coffee quality even when cupping scores do not linearly rise with regenerative intensity.
EP 1574 | Part 4 of 5 | Leading Through Devastation and Finding Opportunity (Kim Thompson)
Q: Is there any kind of transformation or opportunity you should seize during this crisis, or should you avoid risk altogether?
Kim emphasizes acting with ethics and discernment—pursuing opportunities that don't harm others, while being prepared to pivot away from options that don't align with the business's values or resilience goals.
