EP1635 Part 5 of 5 | The Advice Every Coffee Roaster Needs to Hear (Ana Maria Donneys) | Map It Forward
Q: Ana, what advice do you have for roasters?
Focus on building direct, meaningful relationships with producers, understand payment terms up front, and plan ahead for the second semester in a potentially tighter market, especially with El Niño impacting yields and pricing.
EP1637 Part 2 of 5 | Why Coffee Stock Levels Matter More Than You Think (Jonas Leme Ferraresso) Map It Forward
Q: What's the difference between private warehouses and certified stock warehouses, and how does that affect market stability?
Jonas clarifies that private warehouses hold stocks controlled by individual actors and aren't transparent, while certified stocks are more regulated; this mismatch creates uncertainty and can drive price volatility until the harvest resumes or stocks are built up again.
EP1637 Part 2 of 5 | Why Coffee Stock Levels Matter More Than You Think (Jonas Leme Ferraresso) Map It Forward
Q: Could you help people understand stock levels and what is happening with private vs. certified warehouses?
Jonas explains that private warehouse stocks are often low because much of the last season's coffee has already been sold; farmers are increasingly empowered to wait for better prices, using private storage strategically to influence market dynamics.
EP1632 Part 2 of 5 | How El Niño Is Changing Colombia's Coffee Harvest (Ana Maria Donneys) | Map It Forward
Q: Do you think this El Niño will be the straw that breaks the camel's back for some farmers after years of volatility?
Yes, many producers are exhausted and some are questioning whether they can continue; while some communities are trying to adopt more sustainable practices and strengthen producer-roaster relationships, a number of farmers may exit if liquidity and prices don't improve.
EP1632 Part 2 of 5 | How El Niño Is Changing Colombia's Coffee Harvest (Ana Maria Donneys) | Map It Forward
Q: So when you say it's just starting, can you tell us in real terms what that looks like for a farmer? How do you see El Niño starting? What do you notice?
Heat and drought are increasing, rainfall is scarce, and farms are experiencing greater stress on trees and cherries; Mitaka crops were lighter and the main harvest is expected later with overall reduced production, forcing farmers to adapt with shade, irrigation challenges, and diverse regional impacts.
