  • Appreciate the sentiment

Sometimes the conversation stays in compliment-and-agreement mode, and I find myself wishing for more follow-ups and technical/creative depth. It’s apparent that Daniel cares about the community and makes guests comfortable, but going a little deeper would make the show all the better. More specifics about arrangements and in depth technique stuff would be great. Excited to keep listening and see how it might grow.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #302 Jacob Jolliff Returns
Q: What was it like learning this concerto versus Bela Fleck tunes you had to learn for those shows?
Learning the concerto was more daunting due to orchestral context and lack of improv; Bela's tunes felt more like extended versions of his music, which he's influenced by, but the concerto required adjusting to conducting and large-ensemble structure.
The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #298 Jesse Appelman
Q: How did you keep that technique at gigs?
Trust that the sound is getting out there and keep playing normally.
The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #298 Jesse Appelman
Q: What do you work on for tone?
I would start by trying to find the sound that you're going for, with just a single note.
The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #298 Jesse Appelman
Q: When was it where you found like kind of that, that time where you were like, I've really, I've got something here that I really want to pursue?
This happened during high school when I spent hours playing music on my own and got deep into acoustic records.
The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #297 BB Bowness (Solo Album, Practice Techniques and more!)
Q: What tips do you have for practicing effectively?
BB advises spending time writing out solos and practicing them, pointing out the value of creating variations for improvisation.
