  • Great work

I’m thoroughly enjoying Matt’s program. Matt’s knowledge and enthusiasm for bluegrass brings out the best in his guests. They know he “gets it” and open themselves to interesting discussions. I’m referencing select episodes for a book I’m working on. Keep up the great work, Matt. -Mike Fiorito

  • This podcast is my jam

Matt is a gifted interviewer. He’s a super fan of the music and players just like the rest of us who come here to listen

What sets him apart is that he does his homework, asks wonderfully informed and open ended questions … and then gets out of the way. This is a rare gift and the resulting conversations are so much richer for it

  • Wonderful podcast!

Where has this podcast been all my life!? I had searched for bluegrass oriented podcast but for some reason I never found this one but I love it to the core! I’m currently listening to the episodes of the 40th anniversary of Tony Rice’s Church Street Blues LP. This particular LP is how I like Tony Rice’s music the best. It was my introduction to his music and is ever closest to my heart. Again this is an outstanding podcast. Love it!

John Reischman on The Salish Sea and Playing in The Tony Rice Unit
Q: What was it like working with Tony Rice Unit and meeting Tony Grisman connections?
Meeting Tony was a formative moment; he invited me into his band after hearing me play, and I learned a lot from the way he approached melodies and improvisation. The experience with the Tony Rice Unit, including musicians like Sam Bush and Todd Phillips, shaped my sense of band dynamics and flexible arrangements, contrasting with the more studio-oriented Grisman Quintet approach.
John Reischman on The Salish Sea and Playing in The Tony Rice Unit
Q: How did you approach the composition and the collaboration for the concerto?
I designed the concerto with distinct movements that are related thematically and tonally, starting with an E minor first movement, followed by a slow waltz and then a faster, more upbeat third movement. I wanted to keep room for improvisation within a structured melodic framework, so the main melody is composed but soloing references the melody or moves away from it as performers see fit.
John Reischman on The Salish Sea and Playing in The Tony Rice Unit
Q: What is The Salish Sea, and why was it chosen for the project?
The Salish Sea is the body of water between the North American mainland and Vancouver Island. It was chosen for the first movement of a Bluegrass Concerto commissioned in 2024, and I decided to include that piece on the recording because it felt like a strong, representative opening movement that could later be re-recorded as part of the complete concerto.
Tony Trischka - Earl Jam 2
Q: For people who maybe didn't hear that episode or that record, can you give us a quick recap about the project?
Tony explains that Earl Jam started from archival jam sessions and evolved into two volumes, with Volume 2 expanding on the same concept—transcribing Earl Scruggs' playing, inviting a range of guests, and recording new performances that preserve the essence while encouraging fresh interpretations.
Bill Nowlin - 50 Years of Rounder Records, the 'Hobby That Got Out of Control'
Q: And in terms of choosing the music, obviously early on, you would have all had a very strong say in that. Did that remain the case? Was it all, did you all need to believe in a project, or if one of you was particularly passionate, would that be enough to get over the line?
Bill explains that they generally agreed, but if one founder felt strongly, that passion could carry the project forward, and there was room for individual tastes within the batch of releases each year.
