Empowering Leadership with Desirée Rogers
Q: How did your early life and family influence your leadership style?
Growing up in New Orleans in a family that built community through small, service-oriented businesses taught me resilience, humility, and the value of empowering others. I learned to respect diverse talents, to be in the room where decisions happen, and to apply those lessons to large-scale initiatives.
Empowering Leadership with Desirée Rogers
Q: What was your experience like being at the White House, and what key learnings did you take away?
It was incredibly fast-paced and high-stakes, with constant public scrutiny and security concerns. My takeaways centered on service, the need to stay calm under pressure, building a meritocratic environment, and the importance of leveraging a mix of experienced wisdom and new perspectives to drive strategic innovation.
Leslie Zane: A Pioneer in Behavioral Science
Q: What advice do you have for women starting their own firms later in their careers?
Don't start too early; build 10-15 years of real experience, identify a real need, and develop a repeatable, proprietary methodology to differentiate your offering.
Leslie Zane: A Pioneer in Behavioral Science
Q: How did the Johnson & Johnson dad-in-advertising idea come about and what was the outcome?
She insisted on featuring fathers in advertising to expand the brand's connectome, faced initial resistance, but the campaign dramatically increased sales and became a benchmark for the company.
Leslie Zane: A Pioneer in Behavioral Science
Q: What drove you to pursue an education at HBS, and did it fulfill those dreams?
She valued the experience for its camaraderie and the consultant mindset more than traditional teaching; the environment shaped her strategic thinking and the importance of asking the right questions rather than just following a pre-set plan.
