Rachel Reid-McCann on the association between dysmenorrhoea in adolescence and chronic pain in adulthood
Q: What makes the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) particularly suited to this research question, and what are the key strengths of the data?
ALSPAC is a birth cohort from Bristol that started in the early 1990s and has followed thousands of families, collecting extensive health, developmental, and puberty data. Its inclusion of adolescent menstruation information makes it rare and highly valuable for linking early pain experiences with adult health outcomes.
Rachel Reid-McCann on the association between dysmenorrhoea in adolescence and chronic pain in adulthood
Q: Could you tell us a bit about the road pain project and why it's a useful dataset for investigating the link between dysmenorrhea and chronic pain?
The road pain project aims to understand period pain in adolescence, its risk factors, and how it could influence chronic pain later in life. Using ALSPAC, a nationally representative UK cohort with rich long-term data, provides unique access to adolescent menstruation data and subsequent health outcomes, allowing us to study associations across many years.
