Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 131: Dr. Karen Sheffield-Abdullah, Certified Nurse-Midwife, Mindfulness Instructor, and Mother of Four
Q: So how do you differentiate, though, between postpartum depression, anxiety versus a clinical depression that someone might have not in the area of pre or post birth?
Postpartum mood concerns can mirror general depression, but the timing, context of birth, and screening discussions help identify perinatal-related presentations; clinicians should use screening tools as conversation starters and consider a broader, non-diagnostic view of symptoms to guide supportive treatment.
Episode 132: Meri Viano, Mom and Associate Director, Parent/Professional Advocacy League of Massachusetts
Q: Tell us, Meri, for the Just A Moms and Just A Dads out there listening to this thinking, well she knows all of this stuff and Meri is an advocate and she knows all the acronyms and all the things, and there's no way I could ever learn all of that. Talk to us a little bit about how the everyday mom and dad can learn to be an advocate for their children.
Meri recommends building a village, finding community resources, appealing denials from insurance, and engaging with national and local advocacy networks; she emphasizes that parents are the experts on their kids and should keep pushing to ensure access to services, while protecting their own well-being and stories.
Episode 129: Marcia Earhart, Life/Grief/Trauma/Brain/Mental Health First Responder Coach, Mediator, and HeartSync Minister
Q: How was your youngest child's grief journey after losing both of his brothers?
He struggled significantly, showing symptoms of depression, but we worked to provide him with the tools and support he needed for healing.
Episode 129: Marcia Earhart, Life/Grief/Trauma/Brain/Mental Health First Responder Coach, Mediator, and HeartSync Minister
Q: How do you still remember your children and talk about them after such loss?
It's important to incorporate memories of them and talk about their lives so they continue to live on in our stories.
Episode 126: Jeanette Yoffe, Therapist, Founder of The Celia Center, Author, and Court-Appointed Reunification Expert
Q: How was your experience as a foster child?
I felt othered, knowing it wasn't permanent, and was confused about my place in the family.
