Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#017 - Exploring the impact of dexamethasone on the PDA and cardiovascular function
Q: What are your plans for advancing this project and your career after completing the current study?
The guest highlights ongoing data analyses, plans to finalize PDA data, explore lung ultrasound correlations, and expand LV function assessment with strain imaging, while continuing to build mentorship and a strong research network to sustain their academic trajectory.
#017 - Exploring the impact of dexamethasone on the PDA and cardiovascular function
Q: How has your mentor-mentee relationship been, and how has it shaped your trajectory in the NeoCardioLab?
The guest describes a highly supportive mentor in Dr. Gabriel Altit, emphasizing personalized attention, alignment of values, and a collaborative 'army of students' approach that has guided his development and research path, including early involvement through undergrad and a sustained commitment to the lab.
#016 - Racial variations in Near-infrared Spectroscopy: A conversation with Dr. Callie Marshall
Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during your fellowship research, and how did you navigate them?
The data extraction was lengthy and tedious, including central line tip determinations and dealing with inconsistent data collection. I learned to align early with statisticians on data formatting, and to minimize overcommitment by tailoring my activities to what I could meaningfully contribute.
#016 - Racial variations in Near-infrared Spectroscopy: A conversation with Dr. Callie Marshall
Q: What got you interested in this line of research and how did you find your mentor?
I was drawn to neural development and the potential to combine clinical work with big data approaches. I lucked out when a mentor invited me to join his lab at a Christmas party, and the collaboration then aligned with my interests in racial variation and NIRS, providing both scientific rigor and mentorship.
#015 - Use of abdominal NIRS for NEC
Q: What one big piece of advice would you give to an incoming neonatology fellow interested in this line of research?
Start early and think ahead about your future; be proactive in meeting potential mentors, and discuss research interests with program directors early to explore resources and opportunities.
