Does keeping multiple species help keep you in the hobby? with Tim Bailey
Q: What's your view on shows vs. online marketplaces for sales and discovery?
Bailey notes a shift toward pet-centric shows and online platforms, but he emphasizes the value of local shows for community and face-to-face sales, while recognizing that diverse channels are necessary to reach different buyers and markets.
Does keeping multiple species help keep you in the hobby? with Tim Bailey
Q: How do you manage risk and logistics for tortoises and other non-ball-pythons?
He explains outdoor/turtle enclosures, seasonal temperature management, and predator risk (raccoons) as core operational concerns, with practical solutions like attached houses and rotating pens to protect the animals and maintain production when needed.
Does keeping multiple species help keep you in the hobby? with Tim Bailey
Q: What originally drew you to keep and breed multiple species, and how has that shaped your business mindset?
Bailey describes a desire for variety and long-term enjoyment, using revenue from ball pythons to fund other passions and experiments. Over time, he prioritizes sustainability—balancing wholesale revenue with hobby-grade pursuits—and relies on careful planning rather than chasing every new mutation.
Texas Ratsnakes and Nerodia with Aaron Morris of Remes Herpetoculture
Q: Did you get into Texas Ratsnakes independently, or did you want them specifically because of something you saw on the Internet?
I started with an impulse buy in 2019, then gradually got into California-like herpetoculture, but the interest grew from their aesthetics and variability rather than a single online prompt.
Diones Ratsnakes and Other Fun Colubrids with Kevin Saunders of Under the Radar Reptiles
Q: What is your favorite locality of Dione's Rats?
I've kept a few different things, and I think the Chassen has some amazing coloration.
