This show is a delightful treat I give myself every weekend. Each show is a deep dive into a particular topic or region. Michelle finds interesting and articulate experts all over the state and goes out into the field with them. She asks them great questions for a fascinating interview. Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Seeds with Cheryl Birker
Q: What's a powerful practical takeaway for gardeners wanting California natives?
Using California-native seeds from reputable sources, understanding dormancy and germination cues, and not overharvesting wild populations are key, plus considering seed banking and restoration-ready mixes for larger projects.
Seeds with Cheryl Birker
Q: What can trigger germination besides temperature changes?
Germination can be triggered by temperature shifts, chemical leachates, or even smoke and heat from fires for fire-adapted species, with different species responding to different environmental cues.
Seeds with Cheryl Birker
Q: So seeds are clearly a reproductive strategy of plants, right? Where do seeds fit among other plant reproduction methods?
Seeds are one major form of sexual reproduction alongside flowers and cones; many plants also reproduce asexually via stolons, rhizomes, or fragmentation, but seeds generally add genetic diversity through sexual reproduction.
Critical Mast: Oak Trees with Zarah Wyly
Q: What do you wish people knew about oaks?
Zarah wishes people could see their role in natural ecosystems and understand the importance of roots.
Critical Mast: Oak Trees with Zarah Wyly
Q: How did you get interested in oak trees?
Zarah loved oak trees as a child and wanted to connect horticulture with ecology.
