I apologize in advance that this is perhaps the saddest story that I've ever told on The Folktale Project. Han Christian Andersen's 'The Story of a Mother' begins sadly and ends sadly with a bit of melancholy in the middle. Trigger warning - the stor... more
This week's new story is a bit of an Italian mashup. A little Rapunzel, a bit of Beauty and the Beast, and a dash of Baba Yaga. I do hope you enjoy it!

Apologies for the last few missed episodes, adjusting to new schedules is always a bear. But we're back today with a new story from Japan! 'The Wind in the Pine Tree' is a perfect little love story in honor of my wife and the large pine at our new ho... more
Fresh from the archives - one of my favorite English folktales - Take one part "The Goosegirl", one part "Cinderella", and mix it with a little 'Pied Piper' and you'll get the English folktale of 'Tattercoats'.
For some reason, your voice sounds pretentious, but maybe that’s the wrong word, it sounds overly performative to me. I just want to hear a normal voice.
I loved this."Lorelei" is my favorite tale of all time. So much that one day I will name a daughter of mine Lorelei. This reading was great. 100% greatness
The short episodes make it so you never get bored and the frequency is amazing
I have listened to every one of these stories, many more than once, and some many times. The gentle honest voice telling each tale with respect is comforting.
These podcasts are a highlight of my week. I love how he reads them and that the stories are from all over the world!
As I was looking for French and Russian folklore/fairytales, I came across this podcast and I really love it. I like the way Dan narrates each story and how he uses character voices. I listen to this whenever I’m walking on campus. Plus it’s great to learn more about the stories that come from each culture.
These stories are great. I appreciate that 1. they are not just your normal Grimm fairy tales that you hear everywhere else but rather stories from all over the world, and 2. that Dan delivers them in such a soothing way to help you rest your mind. I love to listen to these while falling asleep.
I wish that there were a sixth star
I love listening to these tales with my daughter before she goes to bed. It’s great that we get to listen to stories from all over the world!
I really enjoy the entire feel of this podcast. The host's natural mellow voice and light voice acting give the sense of a father reading a bedtime story to a child. I also like that he lets the stories stand on their own, providing just a little commentary at the end. Listening to this podcast is an excellent (and relaxing) way to discover many tales and many variations of tales.
I wish he would read in a normal speaking voice because stories seem great but can’t get past the campy delivery.
This podcast always calms me down after a long day. Thank you!
Absolutely love this podcast and the care and attention that is taken to procure different folk tales from across the globe.
I love the lack of annoying ads and desperate pleas to leave a review and I love that the delivery of the tales is always neutral and non-judgemental. The narrator always lets the stories speak for themselves which isn’t the case with some other similar podcasts.
Huge fan, keep up the good work!!
The stories are short, which is nice for some light listening, but they are definitely weird and made even weirder by the narrators tone and inflection. But my favorite part is the end comments which are just wild. Not great, but not bad. Also, not like Lore, but it does remind me of the Myths & Legends podcast.
I love this podcast. I really enjoy the variety of folktales from around the world. As a teacher, this podcast is a good way to engage students who finishes early and these stories foster a love of “reading” and help introduce children to different cultures around the world. Thanks for doing this!!
