  • Not what it was

Used to be quite interesting and niche objective stuff. Increasingly just EU propaganda on behalf of the German empire.

  • My favorite podcast!

I love this podcast so much. It’s the perfect balance between informative and entertaining. I started listening to The Europeans in 2022 when at work I started analyzing EU-focused data, and this really helped me learn a lot and contextualize my work. Thank you for producing this lovely podcast.

  • An excellent new podcast find!

I discovered this podcast fairly recently, and am enjoying how it provides an excellent balance between covering heavy and important topics, while also keeping things light and engaging. I have been listening through some of the back catalog and finding it thoroughly interesting.

  • non-westerner could enjoy too

It’s a great show. I’ve been listening to it on and off for years now. I’m not European, not even westerner, so the news isn’t really politically/culturally close to me. However, I like how it reminds me that nothing should be taken for granted; from laws and regulations to ideas and values. When people live in one society for a long time, it’s easy to forget that elsewhere things can be different. I like how this show reminds me of all of these. Thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can Pedro Sánchez unite the global left?
Q: What kind of influencers are we talking about who push followers toward illegal gambling sites?
Influencers come from varied audiences, including home-based content creators and streamers who monetize by directing followers to these sites, often taking a cut, with some targeting older viewers and others reaching younger audiences.
How did Ukrainians end up sailing in Russia's shadow fleet?
Q: What implications does the Hungary election have for Ukraine and European solidarity?
Kozyreva expresses cautious optimism that a new Hungarian government could reduce veto-blocking and improve cooperation with Ukraine and the EU, though notes continuity given the new PM's origins from the previous ruling party and the complexity of EU-Ukraine relations.
How did Ukrainians end up sailing in Russia's shadow fleet?
Q: How is Starlink used in this shadow fleet, and what has been the response from Starlink or Elon Musk?
Starlink provides key communications for crew aboard many of these vessels, with little to no restrictions on purchase; Musk has not engaged, and Kozyreva notes that Starlink's role could be disrupted if access were turned off for sanctioned fleets.
How did Ukrainians end up sailing in Russia's shadow fleet?
Q: What do people mean by Russia's shadow fleet, and how important is it for Russia's ability to sustain its war effort?
Kozyreva explains the fleet as a network of old, rust-eaten ships registered in multiple jurisdictions that move sanctioned Russian oil around the world; it's a flexible, hard-to-trace system that remains a significant revenue stream for Russia, though exact figures are variable due to price fluctuations and sanctions complexity.
Where are the Zohran Mamdanis of Europe?
Q: Where are the Mamdani-type figures in Europe likely to come from, if they come at all?
Dave explains that political structure and media ecosystems favor national or regional figures over pan-European personalities, making a Europe-wide Mamdani unlikely under current systems.
