  • An American Fan!

Much to my dismay, I am American. That said, I’ve spent a great deal of time in Europe—especially because my cousin married a Dutch man, so I visit them in Amsterdam not infrequently. I like to keep up with everything that’s going on across the pond, and this podcast does a great job. It’s funny and informative, and I especially appreciate all the book recommendations! I wish there were a podcast like this for every continent.

  • Not what it was

Used to be quite interesting and niche objective stuff. Increasingly just EU propaganda on behalf of the German empire.

  • My favorite podcast!

I love this podcast so much. It’s the perfect balance between informative and entertaining. I started listening to The Europeans in 2022 when at work I started analyzing EU-focused data, and this really helped me learn a lot and contextualize my work. Thank you for producing this lovely podcast.

  • An excellent new podcast find!

I discovered this podcast fairly recently, and am enjoying how it provides an excellent balance between covering heavy and important topics, while also keeping things light and engaging. I have been listening through some of the back catalog and finding it thoroughly interesting.

  • non-westerner could enjoy too

It’s a great show. I’ve been listening to it on and off for years now. I’m not European, not even westerner, so the news isn’t really politically/culturally close to me. However, I like how it reminds me that nothing should be taken for granted; from laws and regulations to ideas and values. When people live in one society for a long time, it’s easy to forget that elsewhere things can be different. I like how this show reminds me of all of these. Thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The great European air conditioning debate
Q: Katy: Is it realistic to expect Europe to run largely on green energy and still rely on air conditioning?
Eva and Diana say progress is growing, but a full transition requires broader green energy expansion and smarter, localized cooling rather than universal, permanent climate control.
The great European air conditioning debate
Q: Katy: How do we balance health, energy use, and inequality when many can't afford cooling?
Blanca notes that AC saves lives in extreme heat but exacerbates inequality; she advocates for equitable access, better building design, and urban planning measures that reduce heat exposure for all.
The great European air conditioning debate
Q: Katy: Do we need air conditioning everywhere, all the time, or can we rely on other solutions?
Diana and Eva explain that a targeted, design-forward approach—combining public spaces, shading, tree cover, and selective cooling for the vulnerable—can work, while acknowledging occasional necessity for mobile AC in extreme heat.
Every @#$%ing quirk of the English language
Q: Why is Armenia such a critical battleground for Western vs. Russian influence?
Armenia sits at a strategic crossroads between Europe and Russia, with historic security ties to Russia but growing Western-facing reforms and EU engagement, creating a tug-of-war over borders, alliance priorities, and economic orientation.
Ten years on, can we talk about 'the B word'?
Q: Why did Piotr choose Brexit as the backdrop for his novel?
Piotr explains that the Brexit period was uniquely strange and that fiction can explore the human side of this political moment, using humor to address prejudice and to decenter Brexit as the sole national narrative.
