Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S12 E03: Rafal Kaminski on epilepsy, innovation and equity
Q: How do you decide where to focus in Angelini's long-term strategy, and how do you balance pursuing novel technologies with the company's core mission?
Rafal discusses applying a strategic lens, balancing modalities (small molecules, biologics, RNA), and prioritizing collaborations to access external science while leveraging internal capabilities to build a structured, impactful portfolio.
S12 E03: Rafal Kaminski on epilepsy, innovation and equity
Q: But Rafal, before we dive into all of that, I'd love for our audience to learn a little bit more about you. What drew you to Angelini and what has your journey been like joining as Chief Scientific Officer back in 2022?
Rafal explains Angelini's 100-year heritage, its focus on brain health and epilepsy, and why the family-owned culture alongside a commitment to scientific excellence and innovation made it a compelling home for leading R&D efforts and expanding into novel modalities.
S12 E02: Rethinking multiple sclerosis care: From curiosity to care
Q: So what originally drew you to the field of neurology, a very fascinating area of science, and what continues to inspire your work in this area of the industry?
The guest explains that childhood curiosity about how the brain works, reinforced by experiences during education and exposure to immunology near his neurology work at Stanford, propelled him into MS research and a lifelong commitment to understanding and improving patient outcomes.
S12 E02: Rethinking multiple sclerosis care: Challenging old frameworks
Q: What are the limitations of traditional disability scales like EDSS, and what new measurements are being incorporated to capture the full burden of MS on patients?
EDSS largely reflects lower extremity function and misses much of the patient's overall disability, so we've incorporated a composite disability progression that includes EDSS, the 25-foot walk, and the 9-hole peg test, plus biomarkers and advanced MRI to better capture progression.
S12 E02: Rethinking multiple sclerosis care: Challenging old frameworks
Q: Moving from a relapse-remitting view to a more continuous and complex understanding of MS, how has this influenced your team's approach to research and treatment design?
It has led us to categorize MS into relapsing and progressive biology, guiding us to target therapies for both pathways and to prioritize progression beyond relapses, especially in primary progressive MS, while recognizing a continuum between relapse and progression.
