Hal is a literal nightmare. He tries very hard to be deep and likable, but he is a red flag creeper in the highest degree. I cannot believe they recorded this and are unaware of how utterly narcissistic HE sounds. Everyone “loves him”, he “saves the day” everywhere he goes, he writes creepy creepy letters and hands out money like candy. I’m just astounded this made it to air. So disgusting and disgraceful to put this man on a pedestal.
This donor might be the most obliviously selfish person I’ve ever heard speak. Every sentence is a further expression of cluelessness about others’ feelings and callous self interest at the expense of everyone he encounters. If the show is of interest, it’s primarily because this man is so selfish and so oblivious about how awful he it’s.
Hal tells the story of getting to know the adult children for whom he was the sperm donor. It is told very well, but definitely with a spin that is meant to put him in a good light. However, he just can’t hide his narcissism, saying (paraphrasing here) that he thought their parents would be so thankful to him for helping them have children (when he just did it for the money), that he felt like his daughter should cut him some slack when he was being a creeper, because she could inherit real esta... more
This is a good reason not to have a podcaster create a podcast about his good friend. Sperm donor Hal spends days blowing up his daughter’s phone and tells her he’s attracted to her. But the podcast lets dad make self-serving excuses (he was being honest!) and blame his daughter for his inappropriate behavior.
“You need both sides to make a story.” I really hope the daughter tells her own story. I do not feel sorry for this man at all. This podcast made me more sick for the people that are finding out he is their father. The fact that he went out of his way to keep pushing to get his truth out is super weird. His demeanor on the podcast, trying to be super likable was gross. His weird letters that he thought were so special would give anyone the heebie jeebies. The fact that he mentioned how beautiful... more
As a donor conceived person, this podcast is horrifying. I’m on episode 5, and Hal seems to be an entitled narcissist. I can’t comprehend why he thought it was ok to say the things he said to Beka.
**Also, a note to the narrator, “dibling” is not a universally accepted term in the DCP community.
I’m also surprised that we don’t hear the voices of any dcp in this, except for someone reading the written communications they sent. Were they even consulted before publishing this?

Part documentary, part biography, this is a compellingly well told story about a guy whose sperm donor past comes back and severely complicated his life. One of the best parts of this is the exposition amd research that adds a lot to the piece. Totally worth the time.
