Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dermatology Crash Course #20: Acne
Q: To start off, can you please walk us through the pathophysiology of acne?
The pathophysiology hinges on three main factors: abnormal follicular keratinization, hormones causing sebaceous overproduction, and growth of Propionibacterium acnes (C. acnes) in the follicles, all of which combine to produce both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions.
#215: Tips from a Newly-Matched Resident with Haya Beydoun, MD
Q: What practical advice would you give about away rotations and connecting with programs?
Be a reliable team player, demonstrate genuine curiosity, and show willingness to contribute without overwhelming busy residents. Schedule interactions considerately, follow up with meaningful questions, and articulate clearly why you want to be in that location, which helps programs see you as a good long-term fit.
#215: Tips from a Newly-Matched Resident with Haya Beydoun, MD
Q: How did you decide on taking a research year and what was the application process like for those programs?
I viewed the research year as a productive bridge into residency, sought guidance from multiple mentors, and collected insights from alumni and peers to build a robust plan. I applied broadly, spoke to potential mentors early, and prioritized programs with supportive fellowships and clear pathways to match, while also preparing for the administrative and scheduling challenges of a year off.
#211: University of Texas Medical Branch Dermatology Residency with Dr.Janice Wilson
Q: What advice would you give to future dermatology applicants, or anyone considering the field?
If you love dermatology, commit fully and be prepared for the possibility of not matching at first; persistence, authenticity, and strong fit with the program's culture matter as much as metrics, and professionalism should extend beyond the interview into all online and offline behavior.
#211: University of Texas Medical Branch Dermatology Residency with Dr.Janice Wilson
Q: Could you tell us what's inspired you to go into dermatology and how you knew it was the right specialty for you?
Dr. Wilson describes a winding path from non-dermatology interests to dermatology, driven by early patient interactions, exposure through summer programs, and a growing appreciation for the field's variety and mix of medical management and procedures, which ultimately drew her back to dermatology.
