Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 91 - Net Zero Pilot Dairy Farm
Q: Why is it important to improve some of those metrics, such as the six-week-in-calf rate, and what are the flow-on effects for emissions?
Improving reproductive efficiency, including six-week calving rate and empty rate, allows for better herd fertility and stable milk output, enabling strategic culling and genetic gains while reducing total emissions; good repro supports consistent production and lowers per-cow methane through better feed conversion and management.
Episode 91 - Net Zero Pilot Dairy Farm
Q: Can you give us first of all, like to set the scene, can you explain the size of the farm, the number of cows and where and what the farm is?
The Net Zero Pilot Dairy Farm is a 250+ hectare site in Taranaki, part of a partnership with Fonterra and Nestlé, designed to test emissions reduction solutions and reach net zero by 2032. The herd started around 600 cows, now targeting about 550 to reduce reliance on imported supplements, with a stocking rate around 2.6. They've completed three seasons of the pilot.
Episode 95 - Low-N Systems in Practice
Q: Where do we go to from here with this information? How can farmers work out what could work for them?
The team plans to collate all collected data over three more years to provide clear messages for farmers, validate the modeling with additional seasons, and develop region-specific guidance so farmers can pick individual mitigations that fit their environment and goals.
Episode 97 - Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year 2025
Q: How does this experience shape her view on leadership and women in dairy?
She emphasizes the importance of flexible workplaces, diverse roles for women, and the need for all forms of contribution to be recognized as dairy farming, encouraging younger women to pursue varied career paths within the sector.
Episode 97 - Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year 2025
Q: What opportunities arose from winning the award?
She discusses media training, networking with fellow finalists, and new roles with industry bodies focused on future farm systems, genetics, and environmental stewardship, which expanded her influence beyond her farm.
