  • Tariff War

Greg Sargent leads a great interview. Although neither speaker noted that the president causes harm when he loses something, and he lost the Supreme Court ruling about his tariffs immediately before starting an illegal war against Iran, the complete lack of planning for the war, just like the complete lack of planning for the destruction of the (East Wing of the) White House, suggests that this new illegal action was him acting out against a perceived enemy.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Trump Erupts in Fury as Damning Leaks on Botching of War Hit Him Hard
Q: Molly, can you bring us up to date real quick on where this stands and why it all matters?
Molly explains that we're in day 17 of strikes against Iran with unclear strategic objectives, emphasizes the critical importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for global energy and shipping, and outlines the wide economic and geopolitical repercussions if the strait remains closed.
Trump’s Iran Blunders Suddenly Look Darker as Damning New Leaks Hit
Q: How do you assess the internal dynamics that led to leaked warnings and a lack of a coherent exit strategy from this war?
Leaked warnings reflect a deeply embedded problem: a personalist leadership style where dissenting voices are marginalized, and crucial expertise is sidelined, which undermines strategic decision-making and erodes the credibility of foreign policy messaging.
Trump’s Iran Blunders Suddenly Look Darker as Damning New Leaks Hit
Q: What do you think is going to happen with the Strait given Trump's efforts to secure it and encourage oil company passage?
Trump's push to get more ships through the Strait without a commensurate plan or enough allied coordination risks increasing danger, and it underlines a broader misalignment between military actions and diplomatic strategy.
Trump’s Iran Blunders Suddenly Look Darker as Damning New Leaks Hit
Q: Can you just define the importance of the Strait of Hormuz in global terms and how bad is the energy situation right now?
The Strait is a critical chokepoint moving roughly 20% of global oil, so any disruption translates quickly into higher prices and volatility; the war has created a supply shock that is unlikely to resolve quickly due to the strategic vulnerability of the narrow strait and the lack of easy alternatives.
Trump Accidentally Sabotages GOP’s 2026 Strategy in Two Crazed Tirades
Q: Given the 60-vote filibuster reality, how feasible is it for the SAVE Act to pass, and what would Republicans have to do?
Passing would require changing Senate rules or guaranteed bipartisan support, which is unlikely given Democratic opposition and the current composition; thus, Republicans face a strategic dilemma between pursuing the act and defending their broader midterm messaging, with risks of alienating voters who value access to voting.
