Amanda and Rich talk about cover songs. How do they relate to the originals? What's the definitive version of the song? The better version? What makes them interesting musically? Is it a karaoke version? Great but unknown? A horror show? A complete surprise? A Hasselhoff?

An influential band's signature song that found its place for multiple generations, and a cover by an artist who seems to look into our world through her own special lens. Rasputin, originally by Boney M, covered by AURORA.

A modern and compelling take on protest songs that doesn't lean on outrage so much as "there but for the grace of God", and a cover by an artist who redefined what this kind of song can do in the world. Beautiful Strangers, originally by Kevin Morby,... more
We look at one of the best songs from one of the best debut albums ever, and follow with a pair of covers that teach us a lot about how music works and what it really means in the world. Honestly, we didn't see this one coming. Baby Can I Hold You, o... more
A song that defined a band, in spite of their many successful reinventions, and a cover by two unlikely artists — or at least ones we thought were unlikely. Sweet Emotion, originally by Aerosmith, covered by Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon.

Horrible show. Never listening again
I love listening to people who know what they are talking about talk about music. Amanda and Rich have both played music at times and clearly have a broad sense of taste. I love their criteria for rating a cover and the way they experience music overall.
Listened to the episode on Wagon Wheel. The hosts clearly and unabashedly hated on the Darius Rucker version. Fair enough.
Then they unnecessarily brought race into it, seeming to claim the only reason Rucker’s version was the biggest hit was because of his race. They didn’t bother to critique his version of the cover as much as they did they other.
They then claimed Darius “does not belong in that hat,” and backed up that claim with “Charley Pride never wore a hat.”
Sad.
My only complaint: is your microphone broken? Every time you pause or take a breath the mic cuts out to pure silence and it makes sounds like my device died or my headphones disconnected or something. Would be five stars if not for that.
The fun and diverse song selection along with the easy rapport between the hosts make this new pod a delightful listen.
