  • I’m Protestant

I’ve been exploring debates between Catholics and Protestants lately as I’ve become slightly Catholic-curious of late. Listened to episode #1122 of this show and, while it strongly affirmed Protestantism for me and Trent said nothing to change my mind, I was still impressed at his cordiality and ability to have a productively clarifying conversation. Props for that!

  • Serious but not boring

Trent covers serious topics but doesn’t take himself too seriously. (No performative cigar smoking to be found here.) I enjoy the bits of humor interspersed in his monologues, especially on Fridays.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#1152 - FFAF: Talking to Ben Shapiro About Pope Leo XIV
Q: How should Catholics interpret media coverage and public commentary about the pope, especially when headlines highlight conflicts with political leaders?
Media portrayal often emphasizes controversy; Catholics should focus on the pope's measured, precise statements, distinguishing between general admonitions and specific policy proposals, and prefer sober, charitable engagement over sensational interpretation.
#1152 - FFAF: Talking to Ben Shapiro About Pope Leo XIV
Q: So let's discuss, you know, from a Catholic perspective, where is it fine for people to criticize the pope, and where is it not fine for people to criticize the pope?
The pope's infallibility is limited to a narrow doctrinal scope, primarily when he teaches definitively on faith and morals, while most other judgments are prudential and require respectful discourse rather than blanket opposition; Catholics should defer to the pope in matters of faith but can offer reasoned, prudent disagreement on practical matters.
#1155 - FFAF: Answering Atheism with Matt Fradd
Q: How do you respond to the claim that one cannot prove the nonexistence of God or other deities?
Proving nonexistence is possible in principle for logical contradictions (e.g., round circles), and in practice the burden of proof should be shared by arguing why belief in God is more reasonable given the evidence and premises available.
#1155 - FFAF: Answering Atheism with Matt Fradd
Q: Why do you think the best argument for theism is worth keeping despite strong atheist counterarguments?
Because it helps distinguish serious evidence from snark, and it motivates careful examination of why people believe what they believe, moving beyond slogans to examine the actual underlying arguments.
#1051 - FFAF: Geeking out about Star Wars (with Master Samwise)
Q: Can you tell me about your personal history with Star Wars, how you first experienced and how your first experience with it shaped your love for the franchise?
I grew up with Star Wars on VHS, attached to the original trilogy's magic and the hero's journey; that early exposure, especially to A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, created a lasting emotional connection that still informs how I view storytelling and cinematic pacing today.
