  • I’m Protestant

I’ve been exploring debates between Catholics and Protestants lately as I’ve become slightly Catholic-curious of late. Listened to episode #1122 of this show and, while it strongly affirmed Protestantism for me and Trent said nothing to change my mind, I was still impressed at his cordiality and ability to have a productively clarifying conversation. Props for that!

  • Serious but not boring

Trent covers serious topics but doesn’t take himself too seriously. (No performative cigar smoking to be found here.) I enjoy the bits of humor interspersed in his monologues, especially on Fridays.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#1170 - Explaining the Eucharist to Bryce Crawford
Q: Would it be okay for a non-believer to receive the Eucharist in a church that practices close communion?
Bryce explains that reception should be guarded by baptism and church teaching, suggesting that not every non-believer should receive, highlighting the seriousness with which the Eucharist is treated in Catholic and traditional Protestant contexts.
#1170 - Explaining the Eucharist to Bryce Crawford
Q: Let me ask you a question. Do you think Jesus' real presence in the Eucharist is different than the presence of when two or three are gathered in his name?
Bryce Crawford affirms a distinct, real presence in the Eucharist that goes beyond a general sense of Christ being present with believers, aligning more with Catholic understanding that the elements convey and contain Christ in a sacramental way.
#1169 - Talking God and Morality with the Atheist Who Broke Jordan Peterson
Q: How did your personal journey from Christian apologetics to atheism shape your approach to philosophy and public debate?
It shifted the focus from defending a fixed doctrinal position to examining underlying philosophical concepts like morality, truth, and epistemology, while maintaining a commitment to rigorous argumentation.
#1162 - OG Apologetics and Apostolic Martyrdom (with Sean McDowell)
Q: What got you into wanting to write a full academic treatment of the martyrdom of the apostles?
Sean explains that a combination of personal curiosity, classroom experiences, and a need to provide a clear resource for students led him to study the martyrdom question in depth, ultimately resulting in Faith of the Apostles and a rigorous historiographical approach.
#1152 - FFAF: Talking to Ben Shapiro About Pope Leo XIV
Q: How should Catholics interpret media coverage and public commentary about the pope, especially when headlines highlight conflicts with political leaders?
Media portrayal often emphasizes controversy; Catholics should focus on the pope's measured, precise statements, distinguishing between general admonitions and specific policy proposals, and prefer sober, charitable engagement over sensational interpretation.
