  • It’s like having friends in your ear cheering you on!

I feel so lucky to have found this podcast when I was just starting out in my freelance biz earlier this year!

I have gained so much incredible information, inspiration, and knowledge from Rachel and Lynne and all of their guests - it’s been invaluable.

I’ve gone from feeling “how am I going to do this?” to “I think I can do this now!”

Thanks Lynne and Rachel for making this podcast and being so generous with your knowledge but doing it in a really fun and lighthearted way 😀

  • Must-have practical advice

Surely this is one of the most practical and helpful podcasts for freelancers? The audio isn’t great but what’s lacking in slick production is made up for by the quality content. Get a pen and paper and be prepared to absorb all the wisdom shared by the expert guests.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How a services guide will attract clients, with Kendall Cherry
Q: Lynne, do you have any kind of services guide or price list that you give your potential clients?
Kendall explains that she uses a services guide as a lead magnet and primary sales asset, with visible pricing and clear offers; it reduces sales calls and helps qualify leads, while still allowing for custom proposals when needed.
Sabrina Rogers-Anderson on how to niche down and charge more
Q: Do you think niching down changes how clients find you or how you pitch your services?
Yes, niching gives you more control over your pipeline; clients seek you out because you demonstrate expertise, and you can position yourself as the go-to person in that niche.
3 tools to stay focused, finish projects and feel calm, with Claire Emerson
Q: How does Claire describe the shift from digital tools to analog ones?
She argues that analog, especially the Personal Kanban board, reduces digital distractions, provides a clear, physical view of tasks, and makes completion more likely by keeping work visible and tactile.
3 tools to stay focused, finish projects and feel calm, with Claire Emerson
Q: What are the three systems and why are they useful for freelancers?
The three systems are Personal Kanban (a visual, analog task board to limit work in progress and finish tasks), six-week project rounds (short, outcome-focused blocks to reduce distraction and promote momentum), and structured journaling (weekly retrospectives to reset and plan). They work together to keep attention on high-priority work and make progress tangible.
Jane Manning on being a director and writer for television and film
Q: How do you approach charging for projects and negotiating deals in documentary and TV?
Rates vary by project type—contracts for standalone docs versus weekly or daily fees for series—along with the realities and risks of development funding, and she emphasizes developing negotiation skills while recognizing industry standards and the value of experience.
