Someone inform the host that all novels are fiction. That’s part of the definition of a novel. “Novel” is not a synonym for “book.” There’s no such thing as a non-fictional novel.
I read Dr. Eire's books They Flew, Eternity: a short history, and Reformations. Another angle on the same topics covered by Dr. Charles Taylor (A Secular Age) and Dr. Peter Harrison (Some New World). I am hopeful that Mr. de la Cruz and Dr. Eire might cover 19th and early 20th century secular spiritualism as a reaction to the enlightenment and disenchantment. Also, it would be interesting to hear a discussion on American Cosmic and the ufo obsessions as another cultural reaction to a post-Christ... more
A great concept. Lots to like. The section on Protestant Mysticism had little mystical substance and was low on theological hospitality. It would be great if the podcast tried to be a bit more ecumenical. If Protestant mystics is not your area of expertise, why not have a Protestant guest who can speak to it? Or is your audience goal only Catholics?

A thoughtful deep-dive into Christian mysticism, tracing figures from medieval saints to modern contemplatives. Episodes blend historical context, theological themes, and personal narratives to explore how mystical experiences, visions, and religious practices shaped Catholic spirituality across centuries. Hosts emphasize scholarly rigor alongside accessible storytelling, often connecting ancient practices to contemporary prayer, monastic reform, and ecumenical dialogue. A standout pattern is the careful pairing of biographical detail with interpretive threads like centering prayer, visions, relic veneration, and the role of mysticism in education and social history. This mix makes it a likely fit for listeners who enjoy rigorous, history-f... more
