Getting out of school, I used to buy a lot of Kika Premix tapes and when he slowed down, I started making my own little tapes.

Curtiss King is two stories, one being a combination of school influences and a redefinition of self-conquered insecurities.

Q: What got you into really producing?
Iman describes that he started off hearing commercials, recognizing and singling out different parts of music. He later discovered MTV Music Generator on PlayStation, which sparked his journey into production.

Q: How did your collaboration with Black Thought come to fruition?
It started when I was invited to DJ Jazzy Jeff's Playlist Retreats, where I met James Poiser of The Roots, who then helped connect me with Black Thought after I expressed my desire to work with him.

Q: How did you feel about your transition from sampling to chopping records?
DJ Premier opened my eyes to chopping records, showing me how to take just a few notes from a song and create a whole composition out of it. That inspired me to try chopping myself.
