Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Chinky Shukla: When Buddha Stopped Smiling
Q: How have international recognitions changed your ability to share these stories, and what do you hope happens next?
Awards have expanded global reach, helping people understand the real human costs of nuclear testing; I hope to continue engaging scholars and policymakers to advocate for abolition of nuclear weapons and safer practices.
Chinky Shukla: When Buddha Stopped Smiling
Q: What inspired you to start teaching photography to children in the Pokhran and Jadugoda communities?
To democratize storytelling, give ownership to the community, and use collaborative practice so that children and differently-abled individuals can express their own perspectives through images.
Chinky Shukla: When Buddha Stopped Smiling
Q: Chinky, before we go to your projects, how did Jadugoda and Pokhran begin for you personally, and what drew you to these stories?
I resigned from a magazine to pursue long-form, community-centered work after recognizing the severity of radiation's impact on families near Jadugoda and Pokhran, choosing to document slowly and respectfully with the people who live there.
Robert Madden: Planes, Trains & National Geographic (Part 1)
Q: How did it feel, Bob, to be part of history? You got starstruck by seeing the astronauts?
Bob mentions he had previously photographed astronauts while working for the World Book Science Service group and developed a familiar rapport with several astronauts.
Robert Madden: Planes, Trains & National Geographic (Part 1)
Q: Before we start our photography talk, Bob, how would you describe this current chapter of your life being now a grandfather? What's the best part of it?
Bob shares that the best part is being able to choose what he wants to do and staying close to his grandchildren through technology, allowing them to maintain strong connections.
