  • Interesting and informative, I’m hooked

I recently heard about this podcast and have been listening as often as I could. Love hearing the details and history of CSDs (carbonated soft drinks!) John Sicher brings so much knowledge of the beverage industry and I’m hooked when he brings up details from the past. Duane is also fun and great to listen to with his insight. I find the soda discussions my favorite. I recently listen to the 7up Starry Sprite episode and so far one my faves

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 27: Alcohol is in Crisis. RBC's Nik Modi Knows Why
Q: How can major brands balance the needs of aging and younger consumers in a bifurcated market?
Brands should craft a twin-engine approach: offer affordable, smaller-pack options for lower-income or price-sensitive consumers while developing premium, functional products for higher-income groups. This involves flexible packaging, targeted messaging around relaxation and everyday rituals, and cross-category partnerships to broaden portfolios without alienating either group.
Episode 27: Alcohol is in Crisis. RBC's Nik Modi Knows Why
Q: What is driving the current panic in the beverage alcohol market, and what must marketers do to address it?
The panic stems from widespread decline across the three major categories, driven by changing consumer occasions and aging demographics. Marketers should pivot to consumer-centric, micro-occasion marketing, develop affordable entry-level options, and focus on long-term brand relevance rather than chasing premiumization at the expense of core, price-sensitive consumers.
Episode 24: What's Next in Beverage M&A? Hints from PepsiCo-Poppi, Celsius-Alani Nu, and Spindrift-Gryphon. Banker Ross Colbert Joins Us
Q: What role do regulatory antitrust developments play in the potential for larger beverage deals today?
Antitrust consideration is evolving; remedies and settlements are becoming more common, which could enable larger deals if properly structured to appease regulators while unlocking strategic value.
Episode 24: What's Next in Beverage M&A? Hints from PepsiCo-Poppi, Celsius-Alani Nu, and Spindrift-Gryphon. Banker Ross Colbert Joins Us
Q: Could PepsiCo pursue a PBG-style spin-off of its bottling operations today given current investor sentiment?
It's doable in principle, but it would be a complex, leadership-driven reorganization; not impossible, but challenging and unlikely to happen quickly.
Episode 24: What's Next in Beverage M&A? Hints from PepsiCo-Poppi, Celsius-Alani Nu, and Spindrift-Gryphon. Banker Ross Colbert Joins Us
Q: Ross, do you see big players like Coke, PepsiCo, and KDP applying M&A more aggressively to diversify and gain growth in new categories?
Yes, but they are likely to use M&A more strategically and selectively, focusing on categories where they can gain an early mover advantage or fill portfolio gaps, rather than pursuing broad, rapid diversification.
