  • Great Podcast

I have binged this podcast like an 80’s heavyweight at a Vegas buffet.

The three parter with Charles Farrell is a highlight and I will be buying both his books… along with the hosts.

Great series. William talking about his favourite moment being a George fan was brilliant. You could hear the excitement in his voice and can only imagine him at that moment. Keep up the good work Steve. Great great podcast

  • Perfect combination.

The two subjects, I have always gravitated to. Steve lets the podcast breathe and encourages his guests to fully expand with their responses. Which they do because of his enthusiasm and knowledge.

My particular favourites are : Champion, The Set-up, Body and Soul, The Harder they Fall, The Streetfighter, Somebody up their Likes Me and Cinderella Man. The latter, especially as new light on Baer was highlighted on a recent podcast on here, thank you.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Square Ring
Q: January in Bulgaria sounds like a multinational project; how does that collaboration work given language and cultural differences?
Barrett explains he was hired through an international development scheme, speaks some English, and found collaboration with the director a rewarding process despite language differences.
The Square Ring
Q: So I wondered how you describe yourself professionally, and do you enjoy one of those skills more than the other, or do you see yourself as one more than the other?
Alex Barrett describes himself as a filmmaker who also does critic work; he sees himself primarily as a director and editor, with ongoing work in writing and criticism.
Ali
Q: Could you give us just a brief synopsis of the movie there?
The film covers ten years in Muhammad Ali's life (1964–1974), tracing his rise through the Liston fight, name change, religious and political awakenings, his boxing triumphs, and the tumult leading to his legal and personal challenges, culminating in the Rumble in the Jungle.
BONUS - 'The Cinematic Life Of Boxing' at the BFI Southbank.
Q: Out of the Rocky series, which film would you place at number one or which is your favorite, and why?
My favorite is Rocky Balboa for its redemptive arc and its closure of the series, though Rocky 1 remains foundational for its pure, enduring storytelling and production context that defined the franchise.
BONUS - 'The Cinematic Life Of Boxing' at the BFI Southbank.
Q: Off the nine Rocky and Creed films, in total, how many have you seen?
I've watched all of them at least twice, including the Creed films treated as part of the Rocky canon, and I would rank them with a nuanced view, leaning toward the later installments as having strong storytelling while acknowledging the original Rocky's iconic status.
