  • The best of the money show

I would give this a 5 star if it was not for the admin issues with this podcast. Every few weeks all these episodes do not appear on this podcast but on his "Money Show" podcast. Then I use his full show on his other podcast, "Money Show", and then they decide to play all the episodes on "The Best of the money show" podcast again. This has been going on for years. Makes a person crazy. Wake up and fire whoever is managing you podcasts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

RInvestment School: Why your investment strategy matters
Q: How should people think about the two-pot pension structure and access to retirement funds?
Accessing retirement funds before retirement is generally a bad idea due to tax penalties and potential loss of long-term growth, and should only be considered in dire emergencies with awareness of costs and consequences.
RInvestment School: Why your investment strategy matters
Q: What is the role of diversification and asset allocation in a solid strategy?
Diversification across local and global assets is essential to avoid concentration risk and align investments with goals, ensuring you're not all in one winner and maintaining appropriate risk for each goal.
RInvestment School: Why your investment strategy matters
Q: Erin, what should your money do and where should you put it given different time horizons?
For short-term needs, prioritize liquidity and low risk; for long-term goals, invest with growth potential like equities, and use products like retirement annuities or unit trusts when appropriate to balance tax efficiency and accessibility.
The Best of the Money Show: Why cellphone bills jump after contracts end & the business of fixing SA's cars
Q: Labour cost and markup: how do you determine a fair hourly rate and the markup on parts when repairing a car?
The rate varies by workshop, skill level, and location; typical labour can range from moderate to high per hour, often with negotiations to attract customers. Parts markup frequently reflects time spent sourcing parts and the cost of overheads, with around 30% markup for parts common, but it also depends on whether parts are aftermarket or OEM and the complexity of the job.
Consumer Ninja: Bill shock after contract end
Q: Briefly, how did these two cases land up at the end?
Vodacom reversed all charges for one case, and the other customer moved to a cheaper plan; in both, the networks argued that the discounts had ended but ultimately each situation highlighted the need for clearer notifications and proactive contract management.
