  • The best of the money show

I would give this a 5 star if it was not for the admin issues with this podcast. Every few weeks all these episodes do not appear on this podcast but on his "Money Show" podcast. Then I use his full show on his other podcast, "Money Show", and then they decide to play all the episodes on "The Best of the money show" podcast again. This has been going on for years. Makes a person crazy. Wake up and fire whoever is managing you podcasts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Southern Sun sees strong rebound in travel demand
Q: What happened in KwaZulu-Natal that supported your operations there?
Improved governance and a strong conference season, with a boost from government and SAEs as well as sustained demand from both local and international travelers, helped lift occupancy and overall earnings.
The Money Show Explainer: How Spotify driving a R500m boom for SA artists
Q: How does that ratio work?
The amount people get depends on market revenue, the listener source (subscription vs. ad-supported), and each artist's share of total listening after rights holders' allocations are made; there isn't a simple fixed rate per stream.
The Money Show Explainer: How Spotify driving a R500m boom for SA artists
Q: How does the system work? So if a song is played, say, 100 times on Spotify, how much is paid over by you?
Royalties are not a fixed rand amount per 100 streams. They are calculated based on the song's stream share within the market's revenue pool, considering whether listeners are on subscription or ad-supported plans and the track's overall share of listening. Payouts go to rights holders, whose specific agreements with labels or distributors determine the final distribution to artists.
Personal Finance: What is the most important financial decision you will make at retirement?
Q: Brenda asks if there is a realistic way to catch up on retirement savings given she is 55, has 1.4 million, and plans to retire in 10 years.
The recommended approach is a combination: hold the course financially in the near term by supporting dependents and maximizing current savings, then in the next few years focus on boosting retirement contributions and, if possible, work longer or part-time to extend the capital and defer draws. Stay disciplined, cut unnecessary expenses, and avoid get-rich-quick schemes while building up tax-advantaged savings.
Why the SARB can’t afford to wait
Q: Wouldn't it be prudent to wait to see what happens next rather than hiking now?
The guest explains that delaying could allow second-round effects of supply shocks to manifest and make future policy harder, so acting early helps avoid a more aggressive response later.
