Thank you so much for this wonderful, evidence-based podcast with relevant and topical information eagerly sought by new and experienced parents alike! Even for experienced healthcare providers in the maternal-infant field. I am a nurse practitioner hospitalist in the Mother Baby Unit at Mount Sinai in Toronto. We used to work together, Afif, when I was an LC in the postnatal clinic. So nice to find this resource!

  • Highly recommend

This podcast is fantastic and full of the most helpful information. All new parents struggle at some stage or another and the topics covered are great; they certainly brought me peace of mind when I was up at 2am wondering if I’m alone and doing things right! I also took my daughter to Afif for her 6 week check up after she was born and he was brilliant. Everyone should give this a listen!

  • Top tier parenting info

I absolutely love this podcast from a parenting perspective but I listened even before I had my baby as I am a GP nurse. I recommend it to the parents I meet in work. Afif and Anne have a wonderful calming way about them and their years of experience and knowledge provides parents with evidence backed education. We live in a time where info online can be overwhelming and incorrect but you can be confident here listening to health experts and their fabulous range of guests.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

119: Epidurals and the Myth of the Intervention Cascade with Professor Rachel Kearns
Q: What should women ask their anesthetist when considering an epidural?
Ask what the epidural involves, expected pain relief and maternal experience, and discuss risks; also consider how the epidural might interact with your specific risk factors and birth plan, and seek reliable, multilingual resources to inform decision-making.
119: Epidurals and the Myth of the Intervention Cascade with Professor Rachel Kearns
Q: What are the key changes in epidural practice over the last couple of decades?
The biggest change has been the switch to lower concentration local anesthetics, which provides comparable pain relief with fewer motor block and contraction-sensation issues, thus not increasing cesarean risk and often allowing better maternal mobility and rest.
119: Epidurals and the Myth of the Intervention Cascade with Professor Rachel Kearns
Q: We often hear that epidurals can trigger a cascade of interventions. How much of that is supported by current evidence?
In the absence of randomized trials, observational studies show associations due to confounding factors; when studies properly account for indication and other variables, the data do not show a clear causal link between epidurals and increased operative birth or adverse maternal outcomes, especially with low-dose modern regimens.
118: Doireann Garrihy on Becoming Rosie’s Mum
Q: How did you find the early days of being a parent?
The first few weeks were hard but also lovely because I had family around and a lot of help.
118: Doireann Garrihy on Becoming Rosie’s Mum
Q: What was your experience like during pregnancy?
I felt very blessed overall, but the first trimester was tough with nausea and work commitments.
