Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When Religion Enters the Therapy Room with Dr. Stevan Lars Nielsen
Q: What is a practical technique you use to help clients experience emotional change in session?
I often use rationally-motive imagery and guided experiential exercises to evoke emotion, then guide clients through disputing beliefs and reframing with behaviors and outcomes in mind.
When Religion Enters the Therapy Room with Dr. Stevan Lars Nielsen
Q: How do you handle scripture in therapy without pushing a belief onto the client?
I use scripture to illustrate or challenge beliefs within the ABC/ABCD framework, showing how beliefs affect emotions and behavior, while avoiding labeling client beliefs as right or wrong.
When Religion Enters the Therapy Room with Dr. Stevan Lars Nielsen
Q: When therapists avoid or hesitate to discuss religion with clients, what do you tell them about starting the conversation?
If the client is open, I join in with them and follow their lead; I don't pretend to be personally religious unless asked, and I use the client's beliefs to frame cognitive-behavioral interventions.
Why Suicidal Thoughts Don’t Always Lead to Action with Dr. David Klonsky (Encore)
Q: What role does mental illness play in this framework?
Mental illness can contribute to pain, hopelessness, and disconnection, but it is not a sole cause; the theory emphasizes understanding the conditions that lead to desire, not predicting outcomes.
Why Suicidal Thoughts Don’t Always Lead to Action with Dr. David Klonsky (Encore)
Q: How does the three-step theory define step one, step two, and step three?
Step one: extreme pain and hopelessness produce desire; step two: connectedness modulates the strength of that desire; step three: sufficient capability to act in the presence of strong desire leads to an attempt.
