  • Great subjects executed poorly

I love some of the content, especially the Wire episodes, & I have no axe to grind with Rob Elba but his rambling, sometimes incoherent enunciation is infuriating. Stumbling over his words, using 17 words when one would suffice, not finishing sentences etc all make for annoyance. I canโ€™t help thinking that his podcasts could be 50% shorter if presented by A.N. Other.

  • For us record geeks

Lots of great insights and knowledgeable guests here! My only quibble is that the music samples are played at clip thatโ€™s faster than the originals.

  • Devoted to the cause

Thoroughly impressed with how devoted Rob Alba is in his mission to discuss vital albums of our times. Itโ€™s not easy to continue to do a weekly podcast, but heโ€™s in it ~ for over six years. Kudos to Rob & TRGMH!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S9E465 - The Roxy London WC2 with Johnny Iguana
Q: Why did you choose The Roxy London WC2 compilation for this episode?
We chose it because it encapsulates the raw energy, imperfect play, and historic context of late 70s punk, offering a lens into how musicians and audiences interacted in a defining moment, which also influenced Johnny's and Rob's later musical sensibilities.
S9E467 - Paul and Linda McCartney 'Ram' with Nick Estes
Q: Do you think Ram faced unfair criticism at the time of its release?
Yes, there was a lot of backlash around the breakup of the Beatles and the perceived vanity of the project, but over time many listeners have reassessed it as a bold, personal statement from Paul and Linda.
S9E467 - Paul and Linda McCartney 'Ram' with Nick Estes
Q: What made Ram stand out to you personally compared to other McCartney records?
I connected with its intimate, home-recording vibe and the way the songs feel like they were crafted in a family living room, which made learning guitar parts and humming along feel natural.
S9E464 - The Chameleons 'Script Of The Bridge' with Chris Connelly
Q: So let's dive in. So you are in, where are you in the UK?
Manchester, England.
S9E462 - Fugazi 'In On The Kill Taker' with Ryan Sollee
Q: How did growing up in Alaska shape your approach to music, and how did that lead to the current style you perform with The Builders and the Butchers?
Growing up in Alaska fostered a DIY, outsider perspective and a readiness to improvise and experiment, which later fused with lo-fi folk influences when he moved to Portland, creating a unique blend that respects punk energy while embracing folk aesthetics.
