  • A little slice of sanity

Honestly, this podcast has helped me so much. I listen every week and it really helps me feel less alone in my thoughts and feelings around the education system we work in! It also keeps me in the loop of educational trends and this has helped me navigate some tricky conversations about my rights within my setting and also given me perspective on things from all sides, teaching, parents, SLT and everything in between! Thanks for being so consistent in your episodes and weekly scheduling! Xxx

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

196. Q&A: Unannounced Learning Stalks, Parent Emails & Are SATs Pointless?
Q: Am I in the minority thinking that SATs in year six are a good thing?
SATs in year six can provide useful national or local benchmarks and inform interventions, but they should not be the sole determinant of school quality or teacher evaluation; the system should minimize pressure and avoid linking progress data to GCSE outcomes, while preserving some form of end-of-year assessment for accountability and gap analysis.
196. Q&A: Unannounced Learning Stalks, Parent Emails & Are SATs Pointless?
Q: Following on from a recent video you did about learning specific facts being pointless, what room do you think there is for children memorizing facts at all?
There is still a place for memorized facts, especially where they free up working memory and support deeper reasoning and connections; the key is balancing what you require children to remember with broader skills like understanding chronology and cause-and-effect, and not making the entire evaluation hinge on recalling isolated minutiae.
192. Q&A: Cost Of Living Nightmare, Sick Day Pressure & Using A.I. Safely
Q: Is teaching financially sustainable, and what can be done when someone loves the job but can't afford to live?
Acknowledge the systemic issue of low teaching pay relative to cost of living; explore options like workload reduction, targeted side work such as tutoring, and practical strategies to bridge financial gaps without leaving the profession.
192. Q&A: Cost Of Living Nightmare, Sick Day Pressure & Using A.I. Safely
Q: How to approach reports with AI while respecting GDPR and safeguarding?
Safe use involves never including pupil names in AI-generated drafts, using bullet-point scripts, and ensuring clear GDPR safeguards and training; if policies disallow AI, advocate with a safe, compliant framework or alternative approaches.
192. Q&A: Cost Of Living Nightmare, Sick Day Pressure & Using A.I. Safely
Q: What could secondaries learn from primaries in the context of happiness?
Suggestions focus on building transitional links between primary and secondary, maintaining a sense of care and community, and creating smoother social-emotional support during the move to secondary; everything depends on better bridges rather than assuming only student resilience fixes it.
