  • Needs a host with more technical knowledge

Topics are quite good but episodes so frustrating when the host doesn’t understand the topic, is constantly talking over the guests, and hasn’t done the research. Having guests on when you haven’t read the book you want to discuss is just unprofessional, and failing to understand the answers, giving your take and having to be constantly corrected is just embarrassing. Professional host or at least professional editing would make a big difference, as would someone with better level of accounting ... more

  • Insightful

Heidi Robson’s podcast gives a look into tax in an Australian context that is helpful and educational for a lay person with a healthy interest in these issues. What is particularly impressive is the way she incisively dissects the nuances around a specific bit of legislation. Her technique is forensic in the way she draws the distinction and teases the ambit of what might fall within and without: like courtroom advocate electing information from a helpful witness. I particularly liked the discus... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

440 | Family Law Property Settlement Part 2
Q: How can one protect against future family breakdowns for wealth held in trusts?
To protect wealth for future generations, consider setting up separate trusts for each generation while ensuring proper distribution patterns and avoiding UPEs.
440 | Family Law Property Settlement Part 2
Q: What happens if someone inherits something right after the divorce?
If the inheritance is received post-separation but before formalizing the property settlement, it impacts the property settlement. If it is received after finalization, it does not affect the property settlement.
437 | Subdiv EA and Beyond
Q: Why didn't the ATO pursue Subdiv EA in the Bender case?
It might be grossly unfair if both provisions could somehow apply to the same set of facts, as they both are deemed dividends to different people.
437 | Subdiv EA and Beyond
Q: What happens if the high court accepts or denies the ATO's request for special leave?
It will determine whether the Bender case proceeds to the high court for further consideration.
436 | The Bendel Case Part 2
Q: Why does the ATO have such a problem when there is a trust in between through UPE?
A trust can get benefits like corporate tax rate advantages, which if executed poorly could lead to misuse of the tax system.
