  • Good chill podcast

I like this show. It’s chill, talks about trees, doesn’t necessarily promote Davey services, and the people know what they’re talking about. It’s like sitting around with a bunch of tree dorks and having a beer. What could be better?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Helping Pollinators Thrive: Native Species, Plant Picks and More
Q: When choosing between native plants and cultivated varieties, should I worry about pollinators for the cultivar versions?
Most cultivars offer similar rewards to pollinators for nectar and pollen, but some larval forms may be affected by certain red-leaf cultivars, so it's best to favor natives for larval support while treating cultivars case by case for nectar for adults.
Helping Pollinators Thrive: Native Species, Plant Picks and More
Q: If my landscape is organic and I plant many natives, what else should I do to help pollinators beyond choosing native plants?
Identify a few species of interest to support and plan for bloom coverage across the season, aiming for continuous resources and considering the nectar depth to match local bee groups.
Helping Pollinators Thrive: Native Species, Plant Picks and More
Q: Do you feel that in general pollinators are on the decline? Can we say that or not?
There is strong evidence that insects are in decline due to habitat loss, fragmentation, pesticide use, and climate change, so protecting naturalized spaces and using gardens as habitat is important for maintaining diversity.
How Tree Shade Data is Collected & Why it's Important
Q: Who uses the data? Who gets presented the data?
The user base is broad, ranging from academic researchers to school projects with fourth and fifth graders, but the core goal across users is to measure and communicate the benefits trees provide, including cooling and heat mitigation.
How Tree Shade Data is Collected & Why it's Important
Q: Jay, tell me a little bit about the data. How is it collected and what are you collecting?
We use landscape definitions like land cover and impervious surface, plus tree cover, and couple that with weather data from nearby stations (hourly temperature, humidity, rainfall). Then we run these inputs through the iTree Cool Air model to generate spatial temperature outputs that reflect vegetation and urban heat island effects.
