  • Very inspiring!

I really enjoy this podcast. Stanley talks to different people and thus different swimmer types. The talk with blue tits founder Sian is full of enthusiasm whereas the talk to Sandy Burnett full of associations to music. Which is one of Stanley’s favorites turns: his guest bring in music they connect with swimming. So, you’ll have Abba, next to Benjamin Britten, Deep purple or John Cage - who once said: „If you want music open the window.“ Or dive into water...I am enjoying every series and cann... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Toby Robinson, Olympian Marathon Swimmer, Paris, and Bringing Swimming back to the Thames in London
Q: What motivates your ongoing river campaigns in London and across the UK?
Post-Paris, I expanded into the Swimable Cities movement to push for safe, accessible urban waterways, and the Thames campaigns, including the Lords and Commons Cup, aim to normalize swimming and inspire investment and trust in rivers.
Toby Robinson, Olympian Marathon Swimmer, Paris, and Bringing Swimming back to the Thames in London
Q: What was your experience like racing in Paris on the River Seine and its impact beyond sport?
Racing in Paris felt iconic and demanding due to the current, and while there was negative media about the river, I emphasized the race as a symbol of urban renewal and a legacy of river restoration that benefits the public.
Toby Robinson, Olympian Marathon Swimmer, Paris, and Bringing Swimming back to the Thames in London
Q: How did you get started in swimming and what drew you to open-water racing?
I started with swimming lessons and national progression, but open-water racing grabbed me after my coach suggested trying it, and winning a 10K in Madeira made me fall in love with it due to the unique locations and tactical nature.
Laura Reineke, Champion Endurance Swimmer, and Friends of the Thames
Q: Has training for the Triple Crown been very different from other swims?
Training for Channel and Catalina is intensive and demanding, while Manhattan is comparatively shorter in distance but still requires substantial preparation; overall, the three swims share core endurance demands but differ in tides, weather, and distance.
Simon Griffiths, of Outdoor Swimmer Magazine, and Swim Wild and Free
Q: Can we start with some background? What's your swimming story, and what drew you to open water in the first place?
Simon discusses growing up around swimming, time spent in the Gambia where he swam in warm ocean water, and his return to the UK where he joined a Masters club, highlighting open water as a lifelong, multifaceted pursuit.
