  • Fellow Surveyor and Podcaster

I’m a newly licensed RPLS in Texas. Most of my office experience is in Oil and Gas. Not having much experience on the land title survey side The Table A Talk has given me the confidence I need to feel comfortable with what I’m doing. Keep it up! We’re all benefiting and I’m grateful for the podcast!

EP232 Dan Young - Idaho BLM Surveyor
Q: What about the equipment and how you actually perform surveys in remote Idaho terrain?
A mix of static and RTK GNSS is used, with multiple repeaters, control networks, and occasional Wi‑Fi for processing data—emphasizing the logistical challenges of surveying hundreds of thousands of acres in rugged terrain.
EP232 Dan Young - Idaho BLM Surveyor
Q: Is a lot of your work still retracing those original surveys, or are there still original surveys being defined in newer areas?
Most work is resurveys or retracements of original surveys, though some original surveys exist in remote areas; the office also handles grid setting and boundaries where new developments require updating the record.
EP232 Dan Young - Idaho BLM Surveyor
Q: But, you know, bottom line is, tell us a little bit about it. And I guess also, what is a cadastral survey in a normal practice?
Dan explains that cadastral surveys define and reestablish boundaries of federal interest lands, tracing back to the cadaster and the PLSS, with both field surveying and official records work to support land tenure and public-rights administration.
EP230 Gary Kent - Land Title Survey Standards 2026 - Section 6-8 & Table "A"
Q: How does the extended certification to successors and assigns affect liability, and what should surveyors include in their contracts?
The extension to successors and assigns is not intended to increase liability; liability remains tied to the client relationship and statutes of limitations. Surveyors should clearly spell out who is certified to in their contracts, and note that additional parties may be certified for an extra fee, if desired.
EP230 Gary Kent - Land Title Survey Standards 2026 - Section 6-8 & Table "A"
Q: Can you walk us through why Table A item 20 was made mandatory and how it should be implemented on a survey?
Table A item 20 requires that observed conditions and encroachments be summarized in a table on the plat, as factual observations that are readily observable. It reinforces documenting what is seen, not providing opinions, and it remains the surveyor's responsibility to ensure the information is accurate and clearly presented, with an understanding that more items may exist beyond the table.
