  • The last podcast

I just listened to the discussion re UUP & then abt MLMD & SF…and to listen to Cairns state that he knew nothing abt southern politics was nothing short of pathetic…btw I don’t believe that for one second…whose the audience he’s trying to impress? FFS scratch the surface of a DUPer & what? contemptible northern, or should that be Northern , provincialism..& an insecure identity…from a low bar he’s fallen below it…deary me..Cairns needs to broaden his horizons…as if🙄

  • Well Worth A Listen

I have only come to this podcast over the last 2/3 months. As someone who can not listen to the blatant bias of the BBC I really appreciate listening to conversations happy to look at NI issues from all perspectives - even the awkward ones. The three contributors are sufficiently independent of mind not to be tied to standard tropes about unionism or irish nationalism. Keep er lit guys!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Colum Eastwood DebatesIrish Unity
Q: What role does cross-party cooperation play in the unity project?
Colum argues that unity requires collaboration across parties on the island, including Sinn Féin, while preserving SDLP identity, and that building a coalition of like-minded parties is essential to presenting a viable path to a united Ireland.
Colum Eastwood DebatesIrish Unity
Q: Was going into opposition a one-time decision or an ongoing strategy?
It began as a tactical decision grounded in the immediate political reality, but over time the debate evolved to view opposition as a structured, long-term instrument that could harness specific mechanisms (like PAC chairmanship and opposition days) to push for better governance and reform.
Colum Eastwood DebatesIrish Unity
Q: Why did the SDLP decide to go into opposition after so many years in government?
The SDLP leadership, including Colum Eastwood, argued the move was driven by frustration with being overlooked, attacked, and essentially bullied within the executive, coupled with a perception that the government was not delivering for people, which made opposition a tactical necessity to seek accountability and reform.
DUP's Deborah Erskine: Maternity Leave, Late Nights, and Stormont Reality
Q: Your experience of maternity leave—how does it actually work in practice for an MLA at Stormont?
Deborah explains that maternity leave in this context means a temporary pause in chamber voting with a substitute, while she and Olivia balanced hospital stays and public duties, and that the process still involves constituency engagement and online activity.
EXCLUSIVE: Education Minister Paul Givan: "The Critics are Wrong"
Q: How does the minister respond to concerns about acceleration and whether this reform will widen disparities?
He contends that the reform will actually reduce the attainment gap through more specific curriculum content, better alignment of pedagogy and assessment, and targeted support for disadvantaged students, while stressing phased implementation to manage workloads and maintain quality.
