  • Great show

Really cool podcast. As someone who is just starting to dig into the child welfare system (in America!) I appreciate hearing these stories and learning more about experiences of kids in care and how other countries administer their system.

Stories from Foster Care – Katie Wrench part 1
Q: What have you learned about supporting carers and teams in caring for children with trauma?
Key lessons include the importance of supervision, a supportive team, and space for reflection; coordinating with CAMHS and maintaining staff alignment to prevent splits and ensure consistent care for children.
Stories from Foster Care – Katie Wrench part 1
Q: Why life story work and how did you start integrating it into practice?
She explains that many children in care carry unprocessed experiences and that life story work emerged from needing to help children understand why they are in care and to anchor memories; she partnered with colleagues to create tools that are simple, low-cost, and feasible within time and resource constraints.
Stories from Foster Care – Katie Wrench part 1
Q: What first drew you into social work?
Katie describes a random path: studying English and French, doing volunteer work with children in schools, refuges, and a children's home, which sparked her passion for supporting children who have experienced trauma.
Stories from Foster Care – Scott and Tristan Casson-Rennie
Q: What is the current state of fostering in Ireland, and is there hope for the field?
The guests express concern about recruitment and support for foster carers, noting that progress varies by country but the core issue is adequate systemic support; there is hope in continued advocacy and community-led organisations that provide training and resources.
Stories from Foster Care – Scott and Tristan Casson-Rennie
Q: Could you tell us what is FASD?
FASD is a lifelong, lifelong brain-based condition caused by prenatal alcohol exposure; prevention is a joint responsibility of parents, the alcohol industry, and public health, with emphasis on abstaining from alcohol before conception and during pregnancy to reduce risk.
