  • THIS! All of this!

I have been a full time stepmom to 4 children for the last 10 years. While I certainly had some struggles early on, it’s the teen years I am really finding challenging. I can absolutely relate to all the emotions you express. But the 5 Things I Want My Partner to Know NAILED everything I’ve been wanting to express to my partner but couldn’t put into words THANK YOU! Would love an episode on parenting teens.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP 77: The Stepmom Puzzle: Finding Your Place in the Family with Wendy Tamis Robbins
Q: What is one practical exercise you recommend to reset the mindset and reduce victim thinking?
List what you feel you don't have and then list what you actually do have, which often reveals that the perceived lack is a narrative; this grounding exercise helps reframe the situation and reduces anxiety.
EP 77: The Stepmom Puzzle: Finding Your Place in the Family with Wendy Tamis Robbins
Q: What advice would you give to stepmoms who feel alienated when their stepkids pull away during adolescence?
Focus on observing and listening, give space for the kids to grow, and look for small, consistent entry points to reconnect, like shared activities or simple check-ins that don't pressure them to open up before they're ready.
EP 76: You Can't Force It: What Research Says About Teen Stepkids with Dr. Todd Jensen
Q: What does the research suggest about the role of a stepparent with teenage stepchildren?
Research indicates there isn't a should-driven role; instead, families should assess the whole system and co-create a role that makes sense for their dynamics. Potential paths include academically oriented bonding, casual connectedness, or a versatile/involved role, with most success tied to alignment with the resident parent and gradual, authentic engagement rather than forceful involvement.
EP 76: You Can't Force It: What Research Says About Teen Stepkids with Dr. Todd Jensen
Q: We define adolescence differently around the world; can you summarize how age ranges are viewed and why that matters for stepfamilies?
Adolescence spans the period between childhood and adulthood, with age ranges often cited from 10 to 19 by the World Health Organization, though some definitions narrow it to 18 or earlier. This matters because stepfamily dynamics shift as kids in this age range undergo puberty, brain development, and social/identity changes, which in turn impact how stepparents should engage and support them.
EP 75: Parenting Differences & Connection in Stepfamilies with Heidi Farrell
Q: If you could help every step mom shift just one belief about parenting or discipline differences, what would it be?
Trust the process and recognize that small changes take time to build into larger successes.
