Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ray Zinn: Bootstrapping Micrel Through Eight Semiconductor Cycles
Q: What early warning signs should founders look for to avoid slipping into fear-based leadership, and how can investors spot genuine people-centric leadership during due diligence?
Watch for leaders who dominate or create silos through intimidation; true leadership shows collaboration, inclusivity, and a focus on happiness and purpose. During due diligence, probe how teams describe their boss and whether turnover and morale reflect a supportive culture.
Ray Zinn: Bootstrapping Micrel Through Eight Semiconductor Cycles
Q: Can you take us back to the moment you decided to found Micrel bootstrapped and do it your way? What pushed you over the edge from executive to founder?
A combination of wanting control over the company's direction, disillusionment with the prevailing culture at previous employers, and a clear belief that a people-centric, disciplined approach could compete with venture-backed firms. This mindset led to starting Micrel in 1978 without venture funding.
Ray Zinn: Bootstrapping Micrel Through Eight Semiconductor Cycles
Q: I see. You built Micrel in one of the hardest environments possible in semiconductors. From your vantage point, what did you gain by avoiding VC money, and what did you sacrifice founders should be aware of when choosing this path?
Bootstrapping kept Micrel independent, allowed us to retain control, and forced a disciplined approach to growth and profitability from day one, which contributed to long-term resilience. The trade-off was slower growth and fewer external resources, but it created a culture centered on sustainable profitability and ownership.
EU Scale and the Structural Reform of European Seed Funding
Q: What three practical steps should founders take to prepare for a cross-border round?
Founders should secure a local lead investor, search for international investors, and build trust through preliminary agreements.
EU Scale and the Structural Reform of European Seed Funding
Q: What drove you to start Netsprint.pl, and how did that experience shape your later mission?
Tomasz shared his journey of founding Netsprint in a challenging investment environment, experiencing firsthand the need for better funding structures for startups.
