This is our real life, in real Spain. Ten years of adventures since swapping our glorious Victorian House in leafy Essex for a tiny flat in a wild Andalusian village. I was once a Radio Producer in London, not a great one. I sacked Richard Hammond for not knowing enough about cars. Was rude to J.K. and binned her rubbish first edition new kiddies book. Told the man behind Amazon when it launched i... more

  • Thank you very much!

I too live in Spain in the region of catalunya (lets not open up that can of worms) and have done for the last 24 years and have thoroughly enjoyed your podcast throughout these seismic days. I recognised many of the themes such as the love of ‘burocracia’ and often had a chuckle to myself as you gave your slant on them. I wish you and your partner all the best in the ‘Nueva normalidad’ and thank you for taking the time to put together your podcast.

  • A Breath of Fresh Air

I love this and look forward to my daily dose with my first cup of tea of the day.

It gives one an insight into the joys, trials, tribulations and wonderment of Brits establishing themselves in Spain, and embracing a Spanish lifestyle far from the madding crowd.

  • A secret tour guide

It's like an old friend is letting you in on the secret Spain that the average guide book or package holiday will miss. Witty and insightful observation. The odd rude language does not offend but makes you more amused at James' occasional temper with the more exasperating Spanish practices. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Spain's Plan to Beat the Airport Queues – EES, ETIAS and the Future of Travel - ExPat Life in Andalusia
Q: How does ETIAS differ from a traditional visa, and what does the process look like for applicants?
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization that travelers apply for online, provide basic information and security checks, pay a fee, and receive a three-year authorization linked to their passport; it governs entry before arrival.
Spain's Plan to Beat the Airport Queues – EES, ETIAS and the Future of Travel - ExPat Life in Andalusia
Q: What is the core change that EES introduces for travelers who used to get their passport stamped at the border?
It shifts to a digital record of entry and exit with biometric data, moving many travelers toward automated e-gates and faster processing after initial registration at the border.
Spain's Super El Niño Summer - how hot is it getting? ExPat life in Andalusia
Q: What is a super El Niño and why does it matter for Spain?
A super El Niño refers to an exceptionally strong climate pattern that can push higher temperatures, longer heatwaves, and more intense heat events, which in turn affects travel, daily life, and infrastructure in Spain. It helps explain why heat records may be challenged or broken and why preparation and adaptation are increasingly important.
