  • So Grateful

I may be the oldest person outside of the “business” who is monumentally grateful for the efforts you have made to educate songwriters. I wrote poetry & frivolous songs in my youth, but my first real song was when I was raising several of our children, homeschooling them, and going through a terrible time in my church in the year 2000.

I retired from working for our local school district at age 58 a couple of years ago, and recently started searching for songwriter advice (at age 60) to learn mo... more

  • Hooked from the Title

I am definitely realizing how green I am to this whole business. I am so grateful somebody is unlocking part of what is such a mystery and helping with some of the fear associated with the huge leap this is. Being 41, I know I’m late to the whole game and feel like I don’t have time for all of the mistakes. I know I will make some and learn from them, but not having to make ALL of them is awesome. Thank y’all for this. Amazing advice. I hope this podcast sticks around for a long time.

  • A must listen!

A must listen not only for Nashville songwriters, not only ALL songwriters, but for any creative that wants to find joy and thoughtfulness in their process, and to make sure they are making informed decisions about the business side of the art. I truly appreciate this.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A: Sending Songs Around, Networking & Songwriter Executives
Q: Can I send you a song?
The response is effectively no; Laura explains she's not in a position to judge or critique songs and avoids unsolicited submissions.
Mike Robinson: Having Fun While Waiting For Proof That You Absolutely Are A Hit Songwriter
Q: What is the role of preparation versus spontaneity in a session?
Preparation provides safety nets and options, but spontaneity and responsive experimentation in the moment often drive the best results, with each session balancing both approaches.
Mike Robinson: Having Fun While Waiting For Proof That You Absolutely Are A Hit Songwriter
Q: How do you handle decisions when the room disagrees on the direction of a song?
Use diplomacy to gauge the room, consider the energy of the session, and be willing to circle back or gently pivot to another idea without hard deadlines that crush creativity.
Brandy Clark: Pursuing Excellence, Finding Balance and Making Room For The Weirdos
Q: Is there a point where like that sort of mentality was kind of crushing?
Brandy shared that she doesn't feel crushed by the pressure to reach greatness; she feels frustrated when she thinks she's doing something great and it doesn't resonate, which keeps her reaching for more.
Tayla Parx: Sustainable Music Industry Ecosystems and Bettering The Culture For All
Q: What do your deals look like as a publisher?
Tayla explained that she prefers flexible deals tailored to the individual needs of writers rather than the one-size-fits-all model.
